One thread is enough for one question. See my answer. If you are running Windows 10, the USB 3.0 drivers are included.

Hi Leon, I'm experiencing the same issue as BHend11.  Error 31 on USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller.  Your hyperlink "See my answer" takes me to the general community, but not to the post containing your answer.   Could your provide me either with the link to your solution?  Or the date it was posted, so I can search for it?  Thank You.

Hi @Quadzilla40

Sorry, I can't remember what was my answer to the old thread. The normal procedure is to open a thread of your giving details of your problem with attached SSU report as @AlHill suggested. The first thing (as @n_scott_pearson  suggested) is to install the Chipset Device Software (downloaded from the OEM site). After rebooting your system, check if this error still exists and check if there are some Microsoft updates waiting.

If the above will still not help, you may try to download, install and run the Intel Driver & Support Utility. But all this should be done after installing the Chipset Device Software.

So the Intel support engineers can have more information about your system, Download, run, and save the results of this utility as a text file:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility

Then ATTACH the text file using the instructions under the reply window ( Drag and drop here or browse files to attach ).

While I will wait on the system report for more information on what's going on, I will mention that the Microsoft drivers are optimally configured by the Intel Chipset Device Software package. When I see folks having errors like this, I usually recommend that they do the following:

  1. Download the Chipset Device Software package for your motherboard from your vendor's site or the Intel Download Center.
  2. Extract the ZIP file to a temporary folder.
  3. Open a Command Prompt or PowerShell window.
  4. Make the temporary folder your current folder.
  5. Execute command ".\SetupChipset.exe /overall".
  6. Reboot.
  7. Check if the problem has been fixed.

Hope this helps,

Thanks everyone for the quick responses!  Attached the diagnostic text file.  I uninstalled the USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller, which hopefully doesn't mess things up.  The laptop is an ASUS Q500A.  Can you provide direction on which package Chipset Device Software Package I should select?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

I can't find support for Windows 10 on your laptop in the OEM site. This is a page of Microsoft Catalog, where you can download drivers for your Chipset: Intel(R) 7 Series/C216. I suggest that download and try to install INTEL driver update for Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Installation Disk. This may solve the USB 3.0 error. Otherwise you should ask in Asus support.
