does M.2 PCIe 3.1 x4 SSD work on a motherboard that is PCIe 3.0 x4, is it backwards compatible?

A PCIe 3.1 SSD will work on a PCIe 3.0 slot as PCIe technology is backwards compatible.

 

 

Usually, the device will be limited to the PCIe slot bandwidth. However, there's no bandwidth difference between 3.0 and 3.1, just slight improvements over power and functionality among other features.
