Dear Support Community,
I am using Intel Quartus under MS Windows and I want to use the Intel DisplayPort IP Core for Cyclone V FPGA.
As a start, I want to create the example design. To configure this, just before creating the core, the example design can be selected with a checkbox to be generated. The example design is then located under a directory "cv" below the DP IP core directory including readme.txt.
The example design has to be created using the NIOS shell and by executing the script runall.tcl, which fails.
I checked Nios shell and also Windows WSL (version 1) correctly installed. Also PATH variable is correctly set to the Quartus binaries.
First I noticed that I had to patch all filenames of Quartus binaries in the script with additional ".exe."
But I still have the error, that calling "build_ip.tcl fails executing quartus.sh and returns
Info: Command: quartus_sh -t build_ip.tcl
Der Befehl "rm" ist entweder falsch geschrieben oder
konnte nicht gefunden werden.
------------------------------------------------
while executing
"qexec "rm -rf clkrec""
(file "build_ip.tcl" line 28)
------------------------------------------------
Error (23031): Evaluation of Tcl script build_ip.tcl unsuccessful
Error: Quartus Prime Shell was unsuccessful. 1 error, 0 warnings
Error: Peak virtual memory: 4630 megabytes
Error: Processing ended: Mon Jan 20 17:03:34 2025
Error: Elapsed time: 00:00:00
Error: Total CPU time (on all processors): 00:00:00
This is strange, because quartus_sh.exe is a shell and should have the internal tcl commands and linux commands available.
I tested different Quartus versions, 17, 19, 21 etc. alle the same
--> How do I generate the DP-IP Example design under Windows?
Thanks a lot in advance

Hi spte,
Thank you for the updates. My apologies for the delayed response, I was out of the office.
Yes, please upgrade the IP core when using the newer Quartus version after generating the design example in the older Quartus version (18.1). It should work properly.
Please let me know if there are any issues with upgrading the IP cores in the design example.
Thanks.
Best Regards,
Ven

Dear ventt
Thanks for investigating.
I'm one step further now: I had to go down to version Quartus 18.1 Lite. With this version, I could create the DP example design.
It seems, that the flow requires Cygwin to be installed. 18.1 was the last Quartus version using Cygwin.
Since this version (so also the core) is quite old, I now have several options:
- Converting the the pre-compiled project up to a newer Quartus Version and updating the core
- Find out how to use Cygwin to create the core with a recent Quartus version
- Figure out what was the problem with using WSL with the recent version
Hope you bring a bit light into this.
Thanks in advance

Hi spte,
Thank you for the updates.
There are some suggestions to try:
1. Could you try using the latest version of Quartus Standard Edition v23.1.1 on Windows?
2. Please refer to the KDB below on procedures to install the WSL.
KDB: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/programmable/articles/000074066.html
3. What is the Windows version used? Check and ensure that the version build meets these. It is recommended to use:
— Windows* 10 build version 16215.0 or higher
— Windows* 11 build version 22000.1219 or higher
4. Make sure the Nios II Command Shell is working properly. For instance, it should be able to run eclipse-nios2.exe without issues.
5. Could you try switching to a different machine to generate the DP Example Design?
Thanks.

Ven

Dear Ven,
thanks for your hints, the following information you requested:
- Test with Quartus Std 23.1 the same symptom: the run-script of the example design fails with the above error message
- WSL versin: Ubuntu Running 1
- Windows Version: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.19045.5371]
- Eclipse is correctly installed, eclipse is starting, asks for workspace, then ok, no problem
For me, is seems the old DP example design requires Cygwin to run, which is not delivered with Quartus starting 19.1.
What I'm asking is if there is a new version of the DisplayPort example design available - or - if I just should generate the design using Quartus 18.1 and then upgrade the core with my newer Quartus version? Will this be ok?

Dear Ven
I tried to update the DisplayPort IP core example design of quartus 18.1 to Quartus 21.1 standard (that was my favorite version für cyclone V).
IP upgrade and compilation has been successful. I could not test the functionality but concerning the topic of this thread, for me it's ok.
Thanks,
spte
