Hello
I am writing this message regarding the subject line.
【Background】
We would like to determine which edition of Quartus users are using based on the license file usage log.
Currently, the license files I have contain two FEATURES that appear to be necessary for using Quartus: [quartus_pro] and [sw_pe]. However, we do not know which edition of Quartus is being used based on which FEATURE is being used.
Therefore, I am reaching out to you for clarification on this matter.
【Question】
• When using Quartus Prime Pro Edition and Standard Edition, which FEATURE in the license enables the use of the tools?
I apologize for the length of this message, but I would appreciate your response.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

For Quartus Standard Edition, only 'quartus'. Example:
FEATURE quartus alterad 2025.07 23-jul-2025 uncounted \
Use Lite Edition for free.
For Quartus Pro Edition, only 'quartus_pro'. Example:
FEATURE quartus_pro alterad 2025.07 23-jul-2025 uncounted \
Note that Cyclone® 10 GX devices - - supported for free in the Pro Edition

Thank you for your reply.
I understand about Quartus and Quartus Pro.
After checking the license file again, I found that sw_pe is a PACKAGE, and it contains the following three FEATURES.
quartus_nonvolatile_encryption
quartus_pro
quartus
In this case, does using sw_pe mean that one of the above three features is being used?
Also, I saw the quartus_nonvolatile_encryption FEATURE for the first time. What is this FEATURE used for?
I would appreciate your guidance.

> Yes, you are right.
quartus_nonvolatile_encryption is used to enable the design security feature in the Altera FPGA. You may checkout Application Note, AN 556: Using the Design Security Features in Intel FPGAs, for further details.

Thank you for your response.
Thanks to you, I was able to understand the nature of the sw_pe FEATURE and the quartus_nonvolatile_encryption FEATURE.
One last question: you mentioned that you are using either [quartus_nonvolatile_encryption], [quartus_pro], or [quartus] with sw_pe. Is there a way to distinguish which one is being used?
If there is a way to distinguish them, please let me know.
Thank you very much.

Which type of license file are you using—fixed or floating?
If you're using a floating license, after setting up the license daemon, you can run the following command in the command prompt to check the license status:
lmutil lmstat -a -c <license.dat>
This will provide detailed information about license seat usage and availability.
Assuming you have one sw_pe license seat, I believe you should be able to run one instance of Quartus Standard and one instance of Quartus Pro simultaneously. (Note: exclude quartus_nonvolatile_encryption to avoid confusion.)
Unfortunately, I don’t have full visibility into the sw_pe purchased license, so I recommend trying to launch multiple instances of Quartus to check whether it is true that you can run both Standard and Pro editions simultaneously. [1std + 1pro] or [0std + 2pro]. *Only keeping sw_pe feature in the license file to avoid checking out the other quartus/quartus_pro feature.
