Possible to use SBT for Nios II with custom eclipse version?

Does anyone know if it's possible (and what must be done) to use an already installed version of Eclipse together with the Nios SBTs? The background: I have installed a version of Eclipse Helios on my Linux x64 box which is newer and already customized to my preferences, and I want to use this also for Nios Development. 

 

I found no documentation about this, but since the SBT is labelled "eclipse plugins" it should be possible to use them with another eclipse version. I tried to copy the contents of the "dropins" directory to my custom version - this brought up the "Nios II" menus, but attempting to start e.g. the BSP editor yielded an error. Maybe I have to adjust something else also (e.g. in eclipse.ini?)
