Quartus 12.1 crashing alot

Has anybody else experienced many, many crashes with the new release? I have had about a dozen at least in the last few days(3 just today). All last year I probably had 5 between 11.0 through 12.0 SP2.

It will crash when it is just sitting still. I'm off working in another program and all of a sudden Quartus just crashes with an error report that seems to be different each time. It crashes when I'm running signal tap and it crashes when I'm compiling.

It does this on two different machines, both running W7 64 bit and on several different projects. Nothing repeatable, just random crashes when it feels like it.

I have not noticed Quartus 12.1 crashing, ironically it has worked better and more consistently than 12.0 and 12.0 with service packs. The issues that you describe I experience with 12.0, but 12.1 seems to have stabilized this issue . . . James

I haven't noticed any problems with 12.1 crashing, either.

Hmm, I guess they pushed the crashes over to my world then. I have had 5 crashes in the last two hours. Most of them when I didn't even have Quartus active. Just sitting there. I started a SR to place all these in ....we'll see if that helps at all......

FWIW I run constantly two/three instances of quartus 12.1 on W7 64bit /w no crashes yet. I noticed memory usage seems to be way up over Q 9.1 which I used to use but no crashes. I usually run for a couple of days then restart because the new quartus seems to gobble up lots of memory although not quite sure if its a leak or just designed that way.

I've been running several instances of Quartus 12.1 as well and i have been experiencing a lot of crashes as well. mostly during signaltapping..

I've had the same behaviour with Quartus 12.0 and 12.0 sp1 and I was able to solve it with patch 2.16 Hopefully something similar comes out for 12.1 very soon.

Similar issue here. I have a design that 12.1 segfaults on at the completion of mapping.

12.0 has no problems with it. I'm sticking with 12.0 for now and hope altera figures things out with 12.1 SP1.

This is a linux 64-bit environment.

I'm still getting random crashing. Nothing repeatable, usually different everytime. If it does crash and I restart and it trys to bring up all the old screens, it usually will crash again. I then restart for the third time and of course it doesn't remember any windows that are open and it opens fine. I can then bring up the same windows and I can be just fine for another day if I'm lucky. I usually restart quartus at least once a day without any crashes, so I'm not really trying to run it very long....

Sometimes I will go days at a time with no crash. Other times I get 5 or six in a day. Tech support is interested, but of not much help since I can't repeat it.

Actually, I am having crashes now occur when running SignalTap. I am using the 64 bit version of Quartus 12.1 on Windows 7. I have noticed that compile times seems a bit shorter, and that graphics looks different. -James

FWIW, I am starting to suspect a leak in quartus 12.1 because it seems to work better, avoiding the xxx failed unexpectedly messages, if I periodically restart it. I dont have the SP1 installed, and I am still using 32 bit Linux, but know I need to switch to 64 bit Linux install.

I have a lot of crashing using Chip Planner (12.1 Build 177) on my work machine, I found it can be avoided by deleting the Report->Design Partition and just double click to re-generate them.

On my laptop (12.1sp1 Build 243) with separate software Quartus/Device files downloaded from Altera , I get immediate crash whenever I try to load an existing project or creating new project... basically nothing works there. Anyone has the same issue?

Any way you can narrow the problem? What do you mean by crashing? Is there a message? Any particular tool that you use often? I see some people are referring to SignalTap.

12.1 and 12.1 SP1 are barely usable for me (web edition in Win7 64) just for routine builds. I get internal errors during fitting that kill the process and dump out a stack trace. I have to cross my fingers with each build, because it's only around a 50% success rate. The errors are repeatable, but they come and go inexplicably with minor changes to code or timing constraints. Last time I filed a service request regarding a Quartus error Altera told me to buy the full version, so I assume there isn't anything I can do in 12.x without shelling out money. Removing db directories between builds doesn't make a difference. Archiving and extracting a "fresh" version of a project doesn't help, either.

Everything builds fine in 11.1 SP2.

12.1 sp1 seems to have fixed most of the crashes. I haven't had any since I upgraded. But only time will tell......

Hi,

Did you get rid of the problem that you faced on your laptop? I'm facing the same issue of device selection after installing device support package seperately.

Regards,

Vinod
