Cable for RSP3WD080E and RSP3TD160F?

I heard that LSI 9460-16i, which has the same controller, can't use the SFF-8639 to SFF-8643 cable included in intel SSDs to connect to NVMe drives directly. Does intel tri-mode HBA\RAID cards have the same issue? If so, which cable should I get? I only need 2-4 drives per card, so 1 drive per socket is good enough.

Thanks.

Hello Kagamine_Rin,

The cable needed to connect the RSP3WD080E and RSP3TD160F Tri-mode RAID controllers to NVMe drives is the following:

http://ark.intel.com/products/124424/Oculink-Cable-Kit-AXXCBL700HDCV AXXCBL700HDCV

You can check on page 32 of the http://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/server-products/raid-products/TriMode_Adapter_Hardware_User_Guide.pdf Intel RAID Adapters Hardware User Guide for more detailed info.

About the LSI 9460-16i unfortunately we don't have compatibility info. You probably want to double check with Avago directly for such details.

Hope this helps.

Hello Kagamine_Rin,

When you say convert directly to SFF-8639 you mean SFF-8643 to SFF-8639 or how is called now SFF-8643 to U.2?

If this is the case looks like such cable exist but is not manufactured by Intel. It is a 3rd party cable only and is not guarantied to work with Tri-mode RAID cards since voltages and pinout is different for NVMe drives. On intel servers the U.2 connection is made by a hot pluggable backplane with a female SFF-8639 (U.2) on the hdd side and Oculink connectors on the internal side.

Hope this helps.

Actually I want to get rid of that backplane and cage, because that I'm using a different chassis and there may not be enough room. Is there a cable or an adaptor can do that? Thanks.

Hello Kagamine_Rin,

Intel does not manufacture such cables or adapters, even thou there are 3rd party cables as I explained you before. An example is this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Funtin-SFF-8639-Mini-SAS-SFF-8643-Cable/dp/B01COOQ3MS https://www.amazon.com/Funtin-SFF-8639-Mini-SAS-SFF-8643-Cable/dp/B01COOQ3MS

As I told you they are not guarantied to work properly so you can try them at your own risk.

Hope this helps.

This seems to be the same as those came with the drives, which don't work. guess I have to get a backplane. Thanks.
