RAID Controller Connection

I am using an RS2BL080 RAID controller in an SR2600UR server system. My question is, should I be using an HBA cable to connect the controller to the server midplane? I have several servers with this configuration, but only recently started using the HBA cable. I have new server, with the HBA cable connected, and it rebooted and generated this error:

Controller ID: 0 Sensor bad on enclosure: 1

Sensor 5

Event ID:184

Is the HBA cable necessary and could it have contributed to the error? Any help is appreciated.
