VT on laptops

Hi folks,

I'm about to get a new laptop, but I want it to be VT-enabled, so I can install Linux on it and virtualize WIndows using Xen.

Does anyone know if there are VT-enabled laptops? I have been looking for on Internet but so far I cannot find anything.

Thank you in advance,

Sergio

Hi Sergio - the VT (Virtualization Technology) capability on laptops is dependent on the CPU that is in the mobile platform. I suggest you check the following Intel site to review which mobile CPU's have VT capabilities - http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/chart/core2duo.htm

Once you figure out which CPU you would like in your platform, it's easier to pick which laptop you want to utilize.

or - just as an FYI - All Centrino Pro based Laptops contain VT enabled Intel Processors.

My Dell XPS m1210 I got over a year ago is VT enabled. When your looking at laptops look at the model number of the CPU and look it up on Intels site. I know at lease Dell give you the model numbers of the CPUs when you are picking the one you want.

Hi Sergio,

It's very simple ... just go to http://processorfinder.intel.com/ Processor Finder Tool

Select the NOTEBOOK option and you will get a list of processor families available for notebooks. Simply select a processor of your choice e.g. Core 2 Duo Mobile Processor.

After that you will get a long list of available processors under Core2Duo Mobile Processors with a filter list that states SUPPORTED FEATURES. In the filter list, select Intel Virtualization Technology and then press the FILTER ON SELECTION button and you will get a list of all the VT enabled processors in that family. To ensure that the processors are VT enabled, just click on any of the processor listed in the filtered list and you will get the details of the processor, at the end of which, all the supported features are listed out of which INTEL VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY would be specified.

This will greatly benefit you in customizing your search on VT enabled microprocessors for your notebook. I am sending you a list of VT enabled Core2Duo Mobile processors just as an example ... which I have obtained by exercising the procedure I have stated above.

Hope this helps, keep us posted if your problem has been resolved.
