I accidentally set my resolution too high and now I only see a black screen

I've been using my D34010WYK as an HTPC for a few years. I recently upgraded to a 4K TV. As a test to see if it can support 4K output, I used the Intel Graphic Control Panel thing to set it to 4K resolution. When I did that, I got a black screen and suprisingly, it did not adjust back to the original resolution after the usual 10~15 seconds.

Now every time I boot up, I get a black screen with a "no signal" message on the TV. I don't even see the boot loader screen. I know that the computer itself is running and I can log into Windows10. It's still functioning as a PLEX server so the only issue seems to be that it can't display anything.

Is there a way to revert the resolution back to 1080 without being able to see what's going on? I found this youtube video tutorial but it didn't work for me. In the comments section, others who changed the resolution via the Intel Control Panel seem to be struggling too.

It seems very strange that I'm getting the black screen right from boot-up (i.e. black screen even if I hit F2 for the bios). Any help would be much appreciated!!

Hi @YKoba12 ,

There I cases that the video drivers fails to start. While are you connected to directly to the TV. Wait ~40 seconds:

  • disconnect from NUC and reconnect the video cable

or

  • with one hand click on Shift + Ctrl + Windows keys and with the second hand on "B".

That (kind of) worked!!

  1. Shift+Ctrl+Windows+B didn't do anything.
  2. Disconnecting and reconnecting the video cable sort of worked.
  • When I did this, it changed from "No Signal" to just a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened.
    • Dejected, I went and switched over the Netflix for a while (different HDMI input)
    • When I switched back to the NUC HDMI input an hour later, it was getting signal from the NUC @ 4k!
    • After some testing, here's what I've found:
      • Every time I power off/on the NUC, I get the "No Signal" again.
      • Every time I unplug/plug the miniDP back into the NUC, I get the black screen.
      • If I switch the input to something else, and back right away, I still get the black screen.
      • If I switch the input to something else, and back after 10 min or so later, it's getting the signal from NUC. I didn't test out exactly how long I have to wait to switch back.
      • Once it's working, even if I turn the TV off and on, it is still getting the signal.
      • The above is only true when I have the NUC connected directly to the TV. If I go NUC > AVR > TV, I only get "No Signal"

Having to repeat the above step every time I reboot the computer is annoying, but doable. If you have any other suggestions, I'd certainly be interested to hear it. Thank you both, again, for all your help!!

Hi @YKoba12

I have only one suggestion now. I affray however, that although can give good results, you will not like it: for your new TV, buy new NUC (just joking 😀 ). Have a good day and keep your self healthy.

@LWAKSMAN  LOL. I love it. Now if you have any suggestions on how to get my spouse on-board with that solution, you'll be a true hero. Anyway, I don't think I could've gotten as far as I did without your help. Thank you so much and take care.
