Intel VCA 2 & Intel Media Software vs local ffmpeg "bake off"

Hello,

I've been directed here by Intel support, in reference to a head:head comparison "bake off" in throughput between Intel VCA 2 + Intel Media Software vs localized Linux (ubuntu/centos) tools such as ffmpeg, etc.

The attached screenshots show the VCA2 card installed, the Intel provided Ubuntu image for each node along with benchmark results from Intel provided benchmark scripts.

For a successful "bake off", I need to understand how to use the Intel Media SDK software against ffmpeg one-liner's leveraging the "Big Buck Bunny" video examples.

Any/all help would be greatly appreciated, the documentation on Intel Media SDK is very lacking.

Thanks,

Steven Lemons

Hi Steven,

Where did you get the VCA2 software package and performance script? I am asking because I have been support normal Media SDK/Media Server Studio distribution which should not include VCA2.

If this is the case, you should check Open Visual Cloud releases in the following page. The should have a good support to VCA2 and you should be able to do the comparison with FFmpeg:

https://github.com/OpenVisualCloud/Dockerfiles

Let me know your thought.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for getting back to me on this request and my apology on the delayed response.

All VCA2 software used in standing up this environment was downloaded from: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000028110/server-products/server-accessories.html

Thanks for the OpenVisualCloud references, I'll go see if what I need can be found there.

However, maybe you can help me as what I'm looking to do is a "bake off" between opensource ffmpeg utilities converting the same source file while executing the same conversion using Intel Media Software resident on VCA2 NODE OS so a comparison can be drawn to see which performs the encoding/decoding faster: linux opensource ffmpeg or Intel Media Software executed on VCA2 node core(s).

Thanks,

Steven Lemons

Hi Steve,

Apologized for the late response since I was on other project.

Let me clarify your request: So you want to compare the performance diff between ffmpeg and Media SDK of Intel hardware codec? So you want to compare multiple pipeline configure, for example, decoder + vpp, transcoding, etc.

About you comment on documentation, our latest documentation is at:

https://github.com/Intel-Media-SDK/MediaSDK/tree/master/doc

Let me know which part is missing.

Here is our official FFmpeg support site and let me know if this is useful to you.
