Support for Atom processors in embedded Linux

Please can someone let me know if the Intel Media SDK for Embedded Linux will support the Intel Atom x6211E, x6413E and x6425E processors.

I have looked through the various documents on the website, but this just states a minimum requirement for the Embedded Linux Intel Media SDK as follows:

  • Intel Atom® processor E3900 Series
  • Intel® Celeron® processor N3350, J3355, and J3455
  • Intel® Pentium® processor N4200

The release notes state:

Hi,

Thank you for your patience. Media SDK for Embedded Linux only support Apollo Lake - The Intel Atom® processor E3900 series, Intel® Celeron® processor N3350, and Intel® Pentium® processor N4200; it is a subset of Atom processors. So officially, Media SDK for Embedded Linux package doesn’t support any processor out of its hardware requirement. However, customers can use Open Source Media SDK if their processor has the video accelerator hardware. Here is a filter of all Atom processors which has the hardware accelerator: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/search/featurefilter.html?productType=873&1_Filter-Family=29035.

Thanks for answering my question Gopika. Please can you just clarify a couple of points:

  1. What video accelerator hardware do you refer to. Do you mean Intel HD Graphics 500 only, or do you also include Intel UHD Graphics for 10th Gen Intel Processors in this statement?
  2. In your statement "However, customers can use Open Source Media SDK if their processor has the video accelerator hardware", do you mean that the Intel Media SDK will work with processors that have the video accelerator hardware, as clarified in point 1 above?

Hi,

Thank you for the update. To clarify both your questions, by Video accelerator hardwares we mean whether the processors supports QSV (Quick Sync Video). Intel® Quick Sync Video uses the dedicated media processing capabilities of Intel® Graphics Technology to decode and encode fast, enabling the processor to complete other tasks and improving system responsiveness. If the processors support Intel QSV, it supports Intel Media SDK.

As mentioned above, these are the list of processors with hardware accelerator(after applying the Quick Sync Video filter): https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/search/featurefilter.html?productType=873&1_Filter-Family=29035&0_QuickSyncVideo=True.

Hi Gopika,

Thank you for the clarification. Unfortunately this raises more questions:

The link you provided to the filtered list of processors (Filtered for Quick Sync Video support and Atom processor) does not show any results, which suggests that no Atom processor will support Quick Sync Video (QSV).

The webpage for the Intel Media SDK shows the following minimum requirement for embedded Linux:

  • Intel Atom® processor E3900 Series
  • Intel® Celeron® processor N3350, J3355, and J3455
  • Intel® Pentium® processor N4200

So at least the Atom E3900 series is supported.

This suggests that some of the Atom processors can be supported by the Intel Media SDK for embedded Linux whilst NOT needing to support QSV.

Thus I don't really have a definitive answer to my original question, regarding whether the Intel Media SDK for embedded Linux supports Intel Atom x6211E, x6413E and x6425E processors.

Possibly I just need to try it on some real hardware?
