Browser crashing on i9 13900K

Hello,

I have issue that in any browser i get crashing websites or even the whole browser. I installed latest bios update for the motherboard which should implement microcode update for the processor (and have Intel recommended setting, attached screens from XTU). It looks it helped mainly with the games but not with the browser which is still constantly crashing. Sometimes it runs for long time and sometimes it crashes several times.

What looks that helped was disabling turbo boost in bios but this takes down performance.

As the 13th gen is known for degradation issue can this be connected to the damaged processor?

Thank You

Hi AndersonnCZ,

I understand that you're encountering crashing issues in any browser and I appreciate the efforts that you have made so far. For me to address this properly, please share the information below.

1. Was it working fine before?

2. Did you make any recent changes with the system?

3. Did you overclock the processor?

4. What power scheme are you currently running?

5. What is the full model of the motherboard and its BIOS version?

I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Hello Jed,

1) From the beginning there were issues mainly with the games (usualy when compiling shaders or randomly crashing) which are much less frequent now after BIOS and microcode update (lets say very rare now) but the browser get worse. I think i got much worse after some update of the browser, i used Vivaldi but Chrome looked more stable but still crashing, just not so often.

2) No changes, just regular updates of the windows

3) No, i run default settings.

4) Do you mean windows power scheme? I run high performance with default settings.I never changed anything there as i run desktop PC and not laptop. I checked processor setting in the power scheme and there is 100% for both minimum and maximum processor state.

5) I run Gigabite Z790 Gaming X with latest bios. I attached sys info screeen from XTU with complete setup i ran.

And one additional info. Using MSI afterburner i found out that with turbo boost disabled, processor runs at much lower temperature even with higher usage. Before when i had CPU usage of 25% it was running at 70-80 °C, now with turbo boost disabled i have higher CPU usage of 40 % but the temperature is just 50-60 °C. I have AiO water cooling with 240 mm radiator (Be quiet! Silent Loop 2 240 + used ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste). In XTU benchmark 2.0 i had around 11 000 points with thermal throttling active (so temp 100°C ) with turbo boost and now i have 8102 points but with highest temperature just 60 °C when turbo boost is disabled.

Thank You

Hi AndersonnCZ,

Thank you for providing all this information.

It was mentioned that the BIOS update with the latest microcode improved game performance but did not resolve the browser issues. While Turbo Boost is disabled, are you still experiencing browser crashes? If so, is there a specific browser that is crashing? Please try disabling hardware acceleration in the affected browsers to see if that makes a difference.

Additionally, disabling Turbo Boost typically results in a performance drop, which might explain the lower temperatures you're observing.

I look forward to your response.

Hi Jed,

With turbo boost off i didnt experienced browser crashing. I today tried to turn it back on and i found one thing which i didnt mentioned before (i didnt noticed it).

When trubo boost is active even with practicaly no CPU Usage (0-2%) there was about 42% of time throtling due to the Current/EDP limit and even without load frequency was around 5 GHz (my understanding of turbo boost is that it should iuncrease frequency just with high load, not with low load). With every current/edp throtling there was also increase in the temperature.

With turbo boost disabled. I dont get Current/EDP limit throtling even at benchmark testing in XTU.

I made some logs in XTU while normally browsing websites and watching youtube with Turbo boost enabled and disabled to see differences. Maybe it will help.

Thank You

Hey,

I am facing exactly the same issues with pretty much the same configuration (i13900k, 64gb, gigabyte aorus 790 motherboard, 4090 msi card).
Initially I had problems with compiling shaders in games, but after the bios and microcode update it seemed to get better. Last month or so I started getting random BSODs (no pattern in the cause when analysing minidumps). Now, chrome tabs or whole browser seems to be crashing randomly, sometimes few times per hour.

What was the resolution in the original case?

Best regards,

Andrius
