Core i7 980x Dual QPI's ?

I was wondering if the core i7 980x will be able to be ran in a dual CPU configuration. I know it has dual QPI's so it would be possible but I have read that the second QPI will be locked for the consumer CPU. I want the CPU's to be able to communicate directly with each other instead of bottlenecking at the chipset. Any clarification on this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

This does not answer your query directly but I guess it will help.

Intel hosts live chat event with their experts where people can discuss Intel products technologies. The next event will be held around their core processors. I think that it will be a good platform to ask this or any other questions. The next event is on 26th March at 9:30 am GMT. More info at

Hi Iwalton43.

Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition (LGA-1366) have only 1 QPI Link in contrast with e. g. Intel Xeon X5680 (LGA-1366) that has 2 QPI Links (send and receive). So to use 2 single QPI Link LGA-1366 processors in a dual socket LGA-1366 motherboard (e. g. EVGA Classified SR-2) it's not possible since there is only one channel for the communication (one way only). I simple way to fount out is e. g. to go up on Intel's web pages for Intel Core i7-980X as well as for Intel Xeon X5680 and there you queue them up for comparison (see link below).

http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=47932,47916,

To make 2 single QPI Link LGA-1366 processors to communicate true one way channel there has to be a third part management (chip/software) conducting the communication. Intel X58 chipset has not that capacity while Intel 5520 Chipset has it. I do reserve my self for any mistaken information's since there are overclockers that has run Intel Core i7-980X on e. g. EVGA Classified SR-2, but that are under very special circumstances with special modded computer components.

Hope this was in some way answer to your question.

Regards, WOLF.

Yes, you are correct. I had seen that the 980x appeared to have the dual qpi, I was just unsure if it was actually going to have that. It is something that servers would benefit mostly from. I thank you for your detailed answer and yes they would work on the SR-2 since it uses the 5520 chipset, however, I dont know if i would like the bottleneck at the chipset. I just dont think i want to splurge for the dual Xeons .

Hello again Iwalton43.

Sorry to say but i7-980X has ONLY SINGEL QPI LINK! Since I'm in the way to build me a High Performance Computer I was special interested the i7-980X vs EVGA Classified SR-2. But I had to take a new standpointand and focus on Intel Xeon 5600 Series insted, course i do want the SR-2 motherboard

So if you plan to go for dual CPU, I sugest you to look on Intel Xeon Dual QPI Socket LGA-1366 Processors.

Wish you best of luck!

Regards, WOLF

I will more than likely end up doing that. I mean the new board from evga is just sexy . If I dont go the dual CPU route I will go with a single i7 980x and the new ASUS Rampage 3. Im sure that will be enough power for me but I always go overboard.

Best of luck to you also

Thank you for that!

You are completely right about that my friend

ASUS ROG Rampage III Extreme combined with Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition is a "KickAss Component Combination"

Heres some about Intel® QuickPath Technology (QIP).

04-07-2011 update:

Since it was some time I wrote the post as above things have changes.

Today I run on ASUS Rampage III Extreme Edition (and soon go over to Rampage III Black Edition) since I had a change of heart. I come to my since and realised that EVGA SR-2 is far more then I need, to not mention the costs of the power consumption. Regarding the case I run with the Corsair Obsidian 800D but in due course I'm going to buy SilverStone Temjin TJ11 Full Tower Case before the transition to water cooling.
