Does XMP work with i7-6700?

I am purchasing an i7 6700 processor (non k/locked). With this processor am I able to enable XMP and run ram that is rated at speeds faster then 2133MHz?

XMP is feature of motherboard BIOS, so check the MB user guide. There is no guarantee that CPU memory controller will be able to work at higher memory frequency - like with overclocking.

Thanks for your response. I understand that XMP is a motherboard feature but that the memory controller is also a factor. From what I've read online I get the impression I'll be restricted to a non XMP profile/2133MHz however with faster DDR4 memory available remaining at 1.2 volts this is not totally clear.

As I understand it Skylake can take advantage of faster memory speeds without being as hampered by latency compared to previous Haswell products.

Hello BCi,

In this case you can confirm if your motherboard supports higher frequencies managed by XMP's and if the RAM does.

The Intel® i7-6700 processor has a locked multiplier and the supported memory types and frequencies supported are DDR4-1866/2133 MHz, DDR3L-1333/1600 MHz @ 1.35V. Anything beyond that is not a supported integration..

So, do I understand you correctly... with an i7 6700 (not K) which can not be overclocked, there is no point in using any XMP memory or any memory over 2133MHz (for example 32GB Kit (8GBx4) DDR4 2133 MT/s (PC4-17000) CL16 DR x8 Unbuffered DIMM 288pin) I am using mobo Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3 - the Mobo says it supports 2133MHz DDR4 memory and XMP. So is it correct that the 6700 doesn't benefit from XMP? Thanks.

The clocks of memory controller are different from CPU cores clocks, only last ones are locked.

Sorry, I am still confused. Simply then, which is the best DDR4 memory to use with i7 6700 on a Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3 ? Thanks.

Like i said, the motherboard vendor is responsible for memory controller programming, so check the Gigabyte memory QVL for your MB model - http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5499&dl=1&RWD=0# memory http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5499&dl=1&RWD=0# memory support list for verified memory modules.

I was able to do so with an i7-6700k don't know if unlocked multiplier has any bearing on memory speed.
