How much memory is required for an i5 2500 desktop processor?

For an i5 - 2500 processor in a desktop, how much RAM memory is recomended to obtain good results? Is 4GB enough?

It wil be used primarily for heavy engineering computation with small input and small output, heavy excel tables, word procesing, voice recognition, engineering graphs in excel, opening imported Autocad drawings, scaning drawings.
