Hello everyone, hope this is the right forum to post my queries. I have 2 (two) desktops as follows;

PC#1: Intel Core i7-6700K, ASUS Z170K, USB Legacy is Enabled in BIOS

      5.25 Media Dashboard (ASMEDIA Brand) with 2xUSB 3.0, 4xUSB2,

      SD Card Reader, eSATA, SATA

- Windows 10

      All ports are functional

- 64bit Homemade O/S (DOS-like, No USB Keyboard driver yet)

  1. xHCI detected through PCIe enumeration

    VID: 0x8086 (Intel)

DID: 0xa12f (100 Series/C230 Series Chipset Family USB 3.0 xHCI

         Controller)

    VID: 0x1b21 (ASMedia Technology)

    DID: 0x1242 (ASM142 USB 3.1 Host Controller)

  2. Wireless USB Keyboard emulating PS/2 is operational.

PC#2: Intel Core i7-12700F,ASUS Prime B660M-A WIFI D4, USB Legacy

      is Enabled in BIOS

5.25 Media Dashboard (STW Brand) with 3xUSB 3.0, USB Type-C,

      SD Card Reader, eSATA

- Windows 11

      All ports are functional

- 64bit Homemade O/S (DOS-like, No USB Keyboard driver yet)

  1. xHCI detected through PCIe enumeration

    VID: 0x8086 (Intel)

DID: 0x7ae0 (ALDER LAKE-S PCH USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 xHCI Controller)

    VID: STW NOT LISTED!?

    DID: STW NOT LISTED!?

  2. Wireless USB Keyboard emulating PS/2 is Not at all functional !

Questions:

  1. What cause the differences in functionalities between PC#1 vs PC#2 ?

  2. The motherboard of PC#2 clearly states that its chipset is Intel B660 Chipset. In general, when it comes to searching for the appropriate literature in respect to Motherboard's Chipset & CPU's Chipset in Intel galactic library, does “700” as in i7-12700F imply 700 Series ?, does “600” as in B660 imply 600 Series ?

Thanking you in advance for reading the post and looking forward to hearing some enlightenment.

The differences are quite simply the result of having differing chipset devices (and USB architectures) on the two motherboards. As well, most 12th gen BIOS implementations utilize UEFI and do not have CSM support and thus legacy devices - like PS/2 keyboards - are not supported. Most DOS or DOS-like O/Ss rely on the BIOS to provide certain functionality and much of this functionality is in the CSM - which you likely do not have on the second PC.

You can assume nothing about the chipset from the processor designation. For the i7-12700, the 12 portion of the designation is an indication that the processor is a 12th gen. Intel Core processor. The 700 portion is a loose indication of the relative performance of the processor. For example, the i7-12700's performance is going to be better than that of the i5-12600. Again, this is only a loose indication.

As for this chipset designation, the 6xx in B660 is indeed indicating that it is a 600 Series chipset.

Hope this helps,

...S

Many thanks for your prompt response.

Firstly, it's all clear now regarding chipset literature.

Secondly, the BIOS of ASUS Prime B660M-A WIFI D4 does have CSM option and it's enabled, quoting your response that "BIOS implementations utilize UEFI and do not have CSM support and thus legacy devices - like PS/2 keyboards - are not supported. " ... strangely enough I happen to have a genuine PS/2 physical keyboard and it functions well as intended when running the dos-like o/s on baremetal; unless I miscomprehended your statement; in the context of CSM, while I accept that PS/2 emulation through USB Keyboard isn't supported, and yet the physical PS/2 keyboard works well as normal given that PS/2 falls under legacy device category ?

Regards.

Hi Barebone,,

Thank you for waiting for our update.

We are currently in the initial phase of investigating your concern, and we would need to ask the following logs from you:

It would really help us if we can get more information about your system. Please download and run our Intel® System Support Utility from this page. To run it, please press "Scan". After the scan is finished, click next and there will be a save button, giving you an option to save the logs to a text file, please do so and attach the file on your reply. You can refer to How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows* for instructions.

Hello Alfred,

Deepest apologies for the prolonged delay as we've had so much farm work to do in the lead up to spring season.

Attached is the scan result as requested.

Would also take this opportunity to let you know that the pcie configuration space for xHCI on 17-12700f shows that Only MSI-64bit-NoPVM implemented which is a surprise given that on PC#1 both MSI and MSI-X are available, I would have thought that the later the Generation of Intel CPUs the more the MSI-X becomes more prevalent ?

Regards.
