Hello, I've been having several hard crashes where my computer freezes and can only be reset by holding the power button down. I have a 14700k with a Z690-A Gaming Wifi D4 mobo. As I bought the CPU after they bios updates to fix the voltage problems, it was never run with the older bios that were found to be problematic. As I see more and more crashes, I downloaded and ran the intel CPU diagnostics tool. Everything says it passes but then the last line says return status 3. What does that mean? I searched and read there is a problem. I do have a recent bios installed. No AI or any other OC. Massive Artic 360 liquid cooled because my older 240 mm I found wasn't up to the task of cooling the 14700k. I've not changed any CPU items in bios at all or allowed auto OC to run. Any ideas? How can I tell if my CPU is causing more and more frequent hard crashes?

Hello cmarting87,
Thank you for reaching out.
I understand that your system has been experiencing repeated hard crashes that require a full power reset, and that these crashes seem to be happening more frequently. You mentioned running the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool, which passed, but showed a return status of 3, and you’re concerned this might indicate an issue with the CPU.
I also appreciate the details you’ve shared about your BIOS version, cooling setup, and the fact that no overclocking or AI tuning has been applied. We’ll review your case and help determine whether the CPU could be causing the crashes and what steps can be taken next.
- What is the diagnostic tool app you use?
- Could you please provide a screenshot of the error saying return status 3?
Regards,
John M.

Hello cmarting87,
Thank you for providing the screenshot of the IPDT result. I was able to locate the “Return Status 3” that you mentioned.
I will need to check this internally to verify the exact meaning of this code. Once I receive more information, I will provide you with an update.
Regards,
John M.

Hello cmarting87,
Thank you for your patience. I have completed further checks regarding the Return Status 3 code you encountered while using the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool (IPDT).
The IPDT generates specific return status codes to indicate test results. While Return Status 3 is not explicitly documented, Intel diagnostic tools generally follow a structured pattern where error codes are recorded in the results file after testing, with each code corresponding to a specific meaning, classification, and recommended resolution steps.
To further investigate this issue and isolate the root cause, I would like to confirm whether you have already performed the following steps:
- Have you updated the BIOS to the latest version?
- Have you experienced any issues such as BSODs, crashes, or random reboots?
- When was the processor purchased?
- Have you checked the unit for any physical damage?
- Is there any history of overclocking, either manual or via AI tools?
Once I have this information, I will be able to provide the next steps for troubleshooting.
Thank you, and I hope you have a great day.
Regards,
John M.

1. The bios is 4301 released May 2026. There is 1 newer release with improved system security.
2. The reason why I downloaded and used the intel processor tool is because of increasing hard crashes. No BSOD, some infrequent random reboots, not seen since the hard crashes started.
3. The CPU was purchased 3/15/2025.
4. The CPU hasn't been removed since it's installation shortly after it was purchased.
5. I have not run any overclock or allowed the mobo to run an overclock. I haven't had a need to.
