Wish to upgrade my Core i7-4771 cpu on my HPz230 to latest compatible Intel CPU but cannot figure out what that is.

You will need to ask HP what processors their bios supports.  Then, you can select from those.

There will likely not be anything better than what you have, except perhaps a haswell refresh processor.
