Hi,
I'm running a Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 with Windows 8.1 64bit (in an Asus P5W DH Deluxe Mainboard, Northbridge Intel i975X rev. C0, Southbridge Intel 82801GB rev. A1, AMI Bios 2801, 4 x 1GB Corsair DDR2 DIMM, Samsung SSD).
This setup is running very fine.
I bought a Q9650 CPU last week (http://ark.intel.com/products/35428/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q9650-12M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB http://ark.intel.com/products/35428/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q9650-12M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB) which is compatible to the mainboard since BIOS Versio 2103 (http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5W_DH_Deluxe/HelpDesk_CPU http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5W_DH_Deluxe/HelpDesk_CPU).
On http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-034255.htm http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-034255.htm Intel states that this CPU is Windows 8.1 compatible because it supports "Execute Disable Bit"
When I exchange the Q6600 by the Q9650 CPU the BIOS recognizes the CPU correctly. But windows does not load, it stops with a blue screen which states "Unsupported Processor" and then reloads repeatedly.
Only once windows loaded normally with the Q9650 but after that not again.
I also tried a second identical mainboard with Bios Version 3001 but I got the same issue, the pc reloads the whole time.
When I put in the Q6600 again everything is running fine.
Does anybody know what I can do to use the q9650 with windows8.1 in my pc?

The Spec Code (engraved on the metal surface of the processor) should indicate the stepping/revision.
SLB8W <=> E0

Furthermore, did you try a clean installation of Windows* 8.1?
Are you able to install and boot any other operating system?

Yes, it's SLB8W.
Clean installation is not possible at the moment because I need the installed version with many apps and data.
I got a hint meanwhile why the system is not running: http://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/103696/ http://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/103696/
And I was told that I need a mainboard with Intel 4 series chipset.
Can you confirm that?

I can only provide a list of compatible Intel® Desktop Boards; however, the FAQ only indicates that some features will not work properly.

Do you have any spare drive you could use for a clean installation of Windows* 8.1?

Unfortunately not.
I'll get a ASUS P5Q-VM in the next days and test it with this board then.
I'll let you know the results.
