how i5 and i7 with 2 cores outperforms i3?

i5 2nd gen processor 2520M , i7 4th gen 4600U , i7 2nd gen 2620M have 2 cores on laptop versions. is it true?

if true then how 2 cores i7 processor outperforms 2 cores i3 processor ?

Assume cache Size and clock speed same.
