i7K+H170 not full usage even on CPU-Z

Hi, I got an i7 6700k but a H170 chipset. I know it's not the best combination, but at the very least should not it perform stock standard? I'm getting 65%-85% CPU usage most of the time, and in CPU-Z the performance for multithreading is WAY below the reference processor. BIOS tweaking/updates all do not help at all, they make no difference as if the options don't actually do anything. I've complained to the brand, and asked for warranty and I'm getting very little response and help, and I think that's just darn right outrageous. I'm pretty sure the socket is not properly compatible but the manufacturer did say it was compatible in their list. I am even ashamed to look and use this piece of junk, because even my previous cheap AMD system would rock this current "solution". So the motherboard is ASRock Fatal1ty H170 Performance. I'm confident there is nothing more I can do to get the proper performance out of this processor, but this support forum I suppose is my final cry for help, if there's anything that can be done at all, to get this processor working the way it should.

Hi zubzy ,

Can you post all your system configuration with exact model of the components ? I am sure you have a wrong setting somewhere.

Hi Ronin, thanks for the response. The temperature seems fine at load, it can stay even around 35 degrees. The processor frequency is at full speed, but the usage is not, and it's evident on CPU-Z multithreading, and the performance is low. It seems only in the multi-threading department.

When you requested the configuration, I thought it's enough. Motherboard: ASRock H170 Performance, CPU: i7 6700k. The RAM would be irrelevant to this wouldn't it? I've tried basic tests like removing PCI-E peripherals, and default BIOS settings.

I have an Asrock mainboard also but is z170 extreme 7+ and i7 6700k .

If you don't have latest bios version I advise you to update it.

What windows version you have ?

Latest BIOS, does absolutely nothing. I'm using windows 10 64-bit. Interestingly when I tried it with a 5400rpm weaker drive, it is more often 100% load, but still only 10-15% of the time. On the 7200rpm drive it's 65-85% load 80% of the time.

So you have the last bios, or you just say it does nothing ?

You updated windows to anniversary edition ?

Whats the score you've got on multithreading ?

Well at the beginning it's ~8000. Then it just goes lower and lower, Now the average is around 7500. CPU usage 88%. I ran msconfig to stop all services from starting, it seems more consistent that way, but still not always 99%.

I meant the last BIOS did not help the problem I was having at all.

Keep temperature monitoring while you test, to me it seems that your CPU is throttling. And if you didn't update windows to anniversary edition I advise you to do so, because it is better then first release of windows 10.I read someone on this forum that first edition of windows 10 was not recognizing all cores on a 10 core CPU ( was recognizing only 8 ).

I double checked the fan, it was fine. However, there is some good news. In Safe Mode, the performance is correct, it never slows down. However obviously there are a limited set of drivers and services running, but at least it's good to know, the board may be able to perform similarly in the standard boot.

Try to install latest drivers you can find, not those from asrock.

I don't know if you have a discrete video card as you keep your configuration very secret.

Intel is working on a new and better VGA driver, you just have to look from time to time on Intel's driver page and check if there is a newer version then 4474.

I booted into a SSD, and after installing the Realtek audio drivers, the speed is full most of the time, but I'm pretty sure the board has some limits, but I'm happy enough with the performance. I don't know why you need to know my video card, but if you want, I have two Gigabyte 5850 OC. Though thanks for your inputs and suggestions, and there's always room for more recommendations.

no it's hopeless. different sata drives make a difference, but it still slows down. i've tried everything. it really looks like a buggy board

It you didn't reinstall windows and your old system was an AMD one then you may have problems on the new mainboard. You are not the first with a problem like this on this forum.

If you did not reinstall the operating system from an existing chipset, you will find a lot of issues, this is because you had an AMD previously then you moved to an Intel® chipset.

Allan.

Also please check that your cooler is mounted correctly on the cpu and it is not overheating and throttling.
