Linux timer frequency setting

In the MMU distribution, I no longer have the "processor type and features" menu in menuconfig. There I used to be able to set the Linux timer frequency up to 1KHz, though it didn't seem very stable. Now I am stuck with 100Hz. Is there a reason this is gone and is there a good way to change it?

Also, is there any possibility to use a tickless kernel (NO_HZ)?

I tried hacking the option back in, but setting a frequency higher than 100Hz breaks things for me -- for instance, telnet hangs before getting to the shell.
