Software Interrupts

Hi All, 

I want to know about software interrupts and how to generate it in the program. 

I have a USB2.0 device and i am using HAL driver for it and inside the hal driver they register the interrupts. So when inturrupts will come then read and write isr will invoke but at the NIOS application level i can not getting the interrupt as well as data without reading/writting on device. I want to generate interrupt at the application level so i will get the information. If any one having knowedge on software Interrupts on NIOS HAL side then let me know as soon as possible.
