Using the LCD module on Altera's DE2 board

Hi,

This is probably the wrong place to post but I couldn't find help elsewhere after much effort.

I'm using the Altera DE2 board and I just can't get the LCD module (HD44780 controller) to work. I'm trying to write some simple verilog code to set the register values of the LCD module but I can't get anything to display on the LCD. All I've managed so far is to turn it on and off. When the LCD is on, the top row just displays dark blocks. Bottom row is just blank.

Does anyone have some really simple code that displays a character or something using this board? Or know of any other places I could find more help?

Thanks for any feedback, much appreciated.
