build linux application: kernel build directory re

When i build a linux application program,it reports: 

make -k all  

no emulation specific options. 

Rules.mak:162: *** kernel build directory required. Stop. 

I donot know how to specify a 'kernel build directory',will you give me ahand?Thanks!
