Cyclone III Dev Kit Cooling Requirement

We are planning on using a Cyclone III Dev Kit (dk-dev-3c120n) in our prototype device. We are using it only to process streaming video.

The FPGA plus a number of other components are going into the same enclosed box.

I need to figure out how much power the board will draw and how much heat it will produce.

Rough ball park numbers will work for us at this point.

Thanks.

That fully depends on what you implement inside your FPGA, how many PLLs, how fast your design will be clocked etc. If you do not have anything yet then this will be hard to predict.

The guys aren't done with the coding yet, but we are trying to design the cooling and power requirements at the same time. We can assume maxing out the PLLs and clock speed to be on the safe side. Thanks

You can use altera's powerplay estimator http://www.altera.com/support/devices/estimator/pow-powerplay.jsp to give you power and thermal estimates

Then check the datasheet for package cooling requirements

Doesn't have the Dev kit listed. That or I don't know how to convert our part number to the ones listed on the worksheet.

Thanks

It's a Cyclone III, device EP3C120, package F780.

I've just tried the sheet in Excel 2007 and I found it. But in order to make it work, I had to manually authorize ActiveX controls in Excel. Without this the sheet doesn't work and it shows Cyclone V devices, even when selecting Cyclone III.

Daixiwen

I appreciate your help. I'll have to dig into and see if I can get it to work.

Thanks.
