Crazy Package TP Numbers

I have an I9-13900K paired up with an ASUS Z690F Gaming WiFi motherboard. I have been worried about my processor, so make the story short, I just updated the BIOS yesterday. I don't remember what the BIOS number is, but it is a bata and has the 0X129 update. I installed Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and ran some test. Everything appears to be as expected with the exception of Current/EDP Limit throttles every so often and I get crazy high random TDP spikes.

It is the TDP spikes that I am worried about the numbers are like 1013401132158550W, which I know cannot be true.  I have run tests a couple of times without logging, but I have seen spikes like that in both package and core TDP.

I guess what I am asking is that normal or should I be worried and is there something that I can do about it? Any input would be appreciated.

The BIOS has 0X129 update and are set on default.

I'm not having any crashes or issues.

The processor voltages seem okay but I'm not sure. Most maxed in the 1.4V range with some of them hitting as high as 1.505V

Tested using Intel utility and Cinebench.

Thermal Throttled which was expected. Using 2 fan AIO cooling.

Hi DM67,

The microcode update (0x129) will limit voltage requests above 1.55V as a preventative mitigation for processors not experiencing instability symptoms. This microcode update will primarily improve operating conditions for K/KF/KS processors, with less impact on non-K Series processors. Analysis is ongoing to address other scenarios that can result in this Vmin shift on Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors (list of vulnerable processors is here). Intel will share a progress update on this analysis by end of August.

Also, when you mention the TDP number are like 1013401132158550W that seems too peculiar. Can you try and take a screen video doing another test so I can verify it. As this might be just a bug on the application.

Please let me know if you have other inquiries that I can assist you with. I am looking forward hearing from you.

I'm sorry for the delay. I was sick with the flu all week, a family member in the hospital and a friend die. It hasn't been a good week.

I set all of my BIO settings back to default and I haven't had a chance to mess with anything.

I have two computers with the same MB, RAM, Graphics card and M.2 cards.  They are both running the same BIO revision. One has the I9-12900K and the other one has the I9-13900K. Just after my first post, I set both computers to defaults and tested both of them using Cinebench and Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. I didn't have a lot of time, so I didn't log any results. I just wanted to see if both computers produced the same results, and they did.  Both computers had the weird TDP numbers.  With the exception of an odd unrealistic number popping up, everything else looks fine. Unless the 12th Gen is also affected, it is either something with the new BIOS or the software.

I'm hoping to get some time during this holiday weekend to play with the computer.  If I do, I will post the results.

Attached are screen shots from CPU-Z with some system information.

I just got around to running a test. I didn't use Cinebench this time. This time I just used Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and ran the standard stress test for 30 minutes. As far as I know, all settings are on default to include the BIOS which are set on Intel defaults. Attached are small 7-10 second video clips showing what was going on at the time of the anomalies as well as an excel file with the log data. One thing that I have noticed is that the (visual) line peak didn't show up until I changed the size between the left and right sides. The numbers were there but the line peak wasn't.

Below are photos taken after I noticed the anomalies. I had to change the size between the left and right sides to get them to show up and I couldn't get them to show up at the same time. Notice the TDP numbers on the left-hand side of each photo.

The anomalies are fairly predictable and show up after about 10 minutes.

Hi DM67,

I have reviewed the csv file and the images that you have sent to me. Among all those values, I seen a peculiar one, which should is not within normal parameters. How about you provide me the exact model of the following components that you use so we can try on our end reproducing this.

  1. Motherboard:
  2. RAM and size:
  3. SSD:
  4. GPU:
  5. CPU cooler:

Also, while at it are you using the latest version of Intel Extreme Utility? If not, can you tell me the exact version you are using? I am looking forward hearing back from you.

Hi DM67,

Thank you for patiently waiting for, upon coordinating this could you try this recommendation "Intel® Extreme Tunning Utility (Intel® XTU) Is Reporting Incorrect Values"

Also, if the issue still persist could you try to reinstall the XTU, you can follow this guide for your reference: How to Uninstall the Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU).. Let me know what will be the outcome of this recommendation, I am looking forward hearing back from you.
