Is My i7 2600K Running a Little Hot?

I built myself a desktop about 3 or so months ago, at first i didn't have any problems with it, but just recently i have been having some problems. I recently installed Skyrim, but when i started to play it, after about 20 minutes or so, my computer just shut down, like the processor was overheating. so after it happened a few more times i got a monitoring program which told me that my CPU was running between 60 - 80c at idle. I took off the heatsink and the thermal compound was completely dry, so i went and bought some more and replaced it, and now my CPU is running at around 50c at idle. Is this too hot for my CPU?

The TCase of the Intel Core i7-2600K is 72.6 degrees Celsius

The TCase is a number established by Intel® as a point of reference in order to understand what could be expected as per normal processor temperature.

Anything from the Tcase and below will be the expected temperature of the processor in normal use, anything that doesn't stress out the processor (watching movies, burning CDs, browsing the internet, creating documents, etc.) When the processor is stressed out meaning that you are running heavy processor applications that take control of the CPU or uses it at 100% the temperature will go beyond the TCase. It can perfectly reach 80 to 85 degrees and the processor will still be OK. The cooling fan is in charge to keep that temperature there.

If the processor temperature reaches 100 degrees or higher it will send a signal to the motherboard to shut down to prevent mayor damages and most likely it won't be possible to turn the computer back in until it cools down.

The normal processor temperature will depend on the chassis type, the hardware involved and the location of the computer, and it usually is lower than the TCase.

As a recommendation you can install the latest BIOS version for your motherboard.

Well then could you please tell me why after only about an hour and a half of playing Skyrim and my CPU temp barely reaching over 60c, my computer will power off and restart as if it has overheated? And i have updated my BIOS and that did absolutely nothing.

In this case I will suggest you to proceed to test the processor in a known working and compatible motherboard to see if it causes the same behavior.

If that is the case please proceed to call our local support center. Please check the link to choose your proper line of support:

Is the Intel DH67BL a known compatible motherboard? because that's what i have.

Yes sir, your motherboard is fully compatible with the processor; as you can see on the link below:

http://processormatch.intel.com/compdb/SearchResult.aspx?BoardName=DH67BL&Lang=en-US http://processormatch.intel.com/compdb/SearchResult.aspx?BoardName=DH67BL&Lang=en-US

The purpose of testing the processor in another known work motherboard is to check if the situation persists. But still, based on the specifications of the processor, 60°C is an expected temperature that the processor can reach and it will not represent any danger for it and less it represents an overheating issue.

You can check the Tcase for the processor on the link below:

No, since your motherboard is not an extreme series those kinds of changes cannot be performed on the BIOS this unit.
