Hi,

I'm trying to install a clean copy of Windows 11 14H2 on an HP a Pavilion 16-af0002na (A2SB9EA), but the Win 11 ISO doesn't contain a storage driver.

CPU according to a Linux Live CD is "Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 7 155U"

Drive is:-

01:00.0 Non-Volatile memory controller [0108]: KIOXIA Corporation NVMe SSD Controller BG6 (DRAM-less) [1e0f:001a] (rev 01) (prog-if 02 [NVM Express])
Subsystem: KIOXIA Corporation NVMe SSD Controller BG6 (DRAM-less) [1e0f:001a]

	Capabilities: [20c] L1 PM Substates
Capabilities: [390] Data Link Feature <?>

HP don't seem to have the driver for this combination on Windows 11, and have pointed me in your direction. Can you help?

Hi AlHill,

Thanks for replying.

Apologies for not being clear - I'm looking for a solution for a machine with no Windows installation on it already. Is there a slipstreamable driver available yet for this CPU do you know?

Thanks.

I'm wondering if there's actually more here than meets the eye.

The actual error I got on a vanilla install is:-

"Install driver to show hardware"

"Please select the driver you want to install to make your hardware discoverable"

"A media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be a DVD, USB or Hard disk drive. If you have a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with the driver on it, please insert it now."

At first I thought this was a missing disk driver, but now I've had a poke around the Internet, and I suspect this may be a problem reading the installation media instead. I'll poke around and report back regardless.

Well I cant use this laptop obviously, but I'll try a couple of options. I've got an old Windows 10 laptop I can't upgrade, and a Windows 11 VM on my Linux dev machine.

Like I said, I'll report back.

I made a Windows 11 24H2 installation USB on a Windows 10 22H2 installation with an elderly i3-3110M processor.

I'm pleased to report the installation to the hard drive has worked fine, or more precisely I'm on to the next stage.

In summary, the ISO image doesn't seem to work with this hardware.

Many thanks for your help AlHill.

I have found that rufus works well with the iso image, but the usb install works great.

Glad you have it working.

I thought you could open the RST package executable and extract the drivers that you need to put on your installation media. Check out this post: community.intel.com/t5/Rapid-Storage-Technology/Extracting-drivers-from-the-RST-installer/m-p/1537137#M12493, which provides the commands.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the suggestion n_scott_pearson.

I actually tried that before I tried the 'Windows Installation Media' route. The Internet is full of postings from people neeeding RST drivers on older hardware.

The situation is slightly more complex. If I boot off the installation ISO image on the Pavilion (which now has an image on it), I get to the errors mentioned above. At that point, I can use the drivers dialog to browse what's available, and the hard drive is actually there! So what I think is happening, is that the install OS is having problems locating the CD image rather than the hard drive. I lack the knowledge however to investigate this any further. There's probably a log somewhere, if you press the right keys.

I've tried the same image in a KVM virtual machine, and it works fine.

For the record the ISO image is Win11_24H2_EnglishInternational_x64.iso, with a sha256sum of d5a4c97c3e835c43b1b9a31933327c001766ce314608ba912f2fffc876044309. It was downloaded on Jan 6th.
