I am attemping to upgrade my cpu from an i7 2600 to i7 3770 in my Dell Optiplex 990 MT. The socket is an LGA 1155 Sandy Bridge. When I install the 3770 the computer will not boot and is emitting codes. So I put the 2600 back in and check the boot log in BIOS and get a message that states "microcode failed to update". The BIOS firmware is updated to A24. I am running a current version of Ubuntu. I have intel-microcode, amd64-microcode and iucode-tool packages installed through Muon Package Manager. Why wont this update? Is a security patch affecting this? Is it a bad chip? please help

Sounds like the BIOS doesn't have support for that processor (or that processor generation). Specs for the PC state only 2nd gen processors supported.
