i7 4770k - Computer Crashes

Hi!

As the title says, I have an intel 4770k processor, using its iGPU for gaming currently. I have experienced random crashing/freezing when playing games such as League of Legends and Battlefield 3. All software is updated. Nothing is overclocked. I was asked to run Memtest to check if my memory is faulty, but after two passes, the processor temperature rose to 80 degrees. I panicked and reseated the heatsink on the CPU, then ran Prime 95. On small FFT it rose from idle 44-48 degrees to 90+ instantly. I assume its because it induces an AVX load, but since my ambient is around 35 degrees, I'm worried if my continued usage would cause any damage.

I ran Realtemp in the background during gaming with an alarm set for 80 degrees, and again, the computer crashed requiring a hard reset as the keyboard, mouse and the screen froze, with a buzzing noise in the background. The alarm never went off, so I assume temps during gaming is fine. I would like some help in determining if there could be some particular hardware at fault. Note, All drivers and BIOS are updated.

RAM: Gskill 2x 4GB 1600Mhz Dual Channel

PSU : Corsair TX650 V2

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit

Hi Adithya, I'm really sorry to hear you are having issues with your system and the Intel processor.

According to our web site this processor has a TCase value of 72.72 °C; anything from the Tcase and below will be the expected temperature of the processor in normal use.

When you are running heavy processor applications that take control of the CPU or use it at 100% the temperature will go beyond the Tcase.

If the processor temperature reaches 100 degrees or more it will send a signal to the motherboard to shut down to prevent mayor damages and most likely it will not be possible to turn the computer back in until it cools down.

We provide an application that is called Intel® Processor Diagnostics Tool. You can run this application and it will diagnose the processor components and will generate a result. I suggest you running this in to discard any possible issues with the processor (hardware).

Hi Sylvia,

Ive tried the Processor diagnostic tool. It passes everything (FSB and QPI test unsupported) and hits 100 degrees on the CPU stress test. I stopped the test right there. I ran Memtest and it passed both my sticks. My HDD is also fine according to Seagate's utility. Also, I've tried asking around in the game forums, and people tell me that the iGPU might be crashing the game. So now as I am worried about high temps and the iGPU, can this be taken care of by an RMA? Rolling back drivers or the latest ones for the HD4600 don't seem to be fixing it.
