Cyclone V heat dissipation

Hallo everyone,

i currently use a design with a Cyclone 5 A4 (no SoC) and have a heat problem.

The system contains a Cyclone 5, a DDR2(via Hard Memory Controller) and Gigabit Ethernet. The FPGA is not cooled, neither active nor passive. When working at full speed i can measure 70°C at the top of the FPGA-package at room temperature after several hours.

At another comparable System with a Cyclone 3 i measure 53°C at the top of the FPGA-package.

Is somebody else using a Cyclone 5 and did some temperature measurements? Did you too see such high temperatures?

Right now i measured an unconfigured Cyclone 5 with 40°C. Is this really normal, or do i make an error.

All help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Rainer
