I had an idea to use a FPGA based controlling architecture to reduce the amount of energy consumed by domestic appliances . so wht I would lyk to know is which chip would be best suited for this and what is the best way to interface the appliances with fpga n how much can all this cost?

Wouldn't a simple 8-bit micro-controller be more adequate?

No, I don't think a microcontroller would do as we will need tolink a lot of appliances and as the FPGA would act as a gateway between the meter and the appliances

The circuit will basically consist of a FPGA based algorithmic control circuit which would be triggered by the signal sent by the smart meter. Then the consumption details and user's preference can be fed in the controlling circuit and it can be installed as a gateway between the home network and the meter. Now when consumption crosses the threshold value meter will send a signal to the controlling circuit which will search for devices in standby state or high consumption state.

I still don't see the point of using an FPGA for that application. What kind of algorithm? It looks more like a software problem, and all you have to do is select a CPU with enough computing power and I/O to do that...
