Hello,
I am using Stratix III with data conversion card. I realized that HSMA_BYPASS has to be set 1 to enable the port A. This mean that JTAG setting should be set at '1100' in sw 1; "Embedded USB Blaster Stratix III device + HSMC Port A". however, it is not programming. it says "can't access JTAG chain" Is that because the host board (Stratix III) does not have HSMC drive? what has to be installed? I installed everything comes with CD. Thank you for sharing your knowledge..Link Copied

If the JTAG chain is operational in '1000' setting, the installed HSMC board is most likely not using the JTAG interface at all. Is it said to use it?
P.S.: If you're possibly refering to the Terasic Data Conversion board, the manual doesn't even mention JTAG and it has no components, that could be accessed through JTAG.- Mark as New

In order to use HSMC Port A, shouldn't JTAG setting be '1100'?
How do you enable the HSMC Port A or HSMC Port B? (JTAG setting on page 26) http://www.altera.com/literature/manual/rm_stratixiii_dev_kit_host_board.pdf- Mark as New

--- Quote Start --- In order to use HSMC Port A, shouldn't JTAG setting be '1100'? --- Quote End --- No. --- Quote Start --- How do you enable the HSMC Port A or HSMC Port B? --- Quote End --- It doesn't need to be enabled. The switch is required to enable jtag function on hsmc connectors, not to enable HSMC ports itself. JTAG can be used only with a HSMC card that's supporting it.

I'm sorry, but can you specify the instruction?
"the switch is required to enable jtag function on hsmc connectors" when you said 'the switch', are you referring to JTAG control DIP switch or MAX II control DIP switch? I am not really sure what "Embedded USB Blaster Stratix III device + HSMC Port A" mean on JTAG setting table. once again, thank you for sharing your knowledge.- Mark as New

Referring to your original question:
--- Quote Start --- I am using Stratix III with data conversion card. I realized that HSMA_BYPASS has to be set 1 to enable the port A. --- Quote End --- This is wrong. Read the manual strictly. Yes, I'm talking of JTAG control DIP switch. The setting HSMA_BYPASS = 1 is only correct, if a JTAG capable device is connected at the HSMA port. With no JTAG device at HSMA port, you get "can't access JTAG chain", as you already tried.
