I am running the runtest program on the legup 3.0 install. It is used to check the install.
I got the following error. sim -c -do "vlib work; exit;" Unable to checkout a license. Make sure your license file environment variable (e.g., LM_LICENSE_FILE) is set correctly and then run 'lmutil lmdiag' to diagnose the problem. Unable to checkout a license. Vsim is closing. ** Fatal: Invalid license environment. Application closing. make: *** [v] Error 4 FAIL: Modelsim simulation. Expected: Error: memory address not aligned to ram word size! It seems that it is lokking for a license file. I have other software on my system that uses flexlm. The error seems to be occuring in Modelsim's execution. I downloaded a verson of it which was on the same page as Quartus II 11.1sp2. So I guess it means that I can run it (this version of Modelsim). It does not work and asks for a license file. I guess license.dat. However, I thought that all of this was free and I did not have to buy a license file. How do I fix? Thanks in advance. R, Lou_ReedLink Copied

Modelsim altera edition requires a licence that must be bought from altera.
Modelsim starter edition (that comes with the webpack) does not require a licence.- Mark as New

yes tricky but Quartus 14.1 DVD that includes modelsim altera starter edition (ase) installs it, but everytime i click on modelsim icon it launches Modelsim Altera Edition. which of course demands license file. i assume it's a bug in the installer package. Lou_Reed download modelsim altera starter edition separately from altera download center and try with that.

Its not a bug. You installed the altera edition. You need to download the web edition from the web site.
You can install mulitple version of modelsim and quartus on a single machine.- Mark as New

no tricky i installed the free one from Quartus 14.1 DVD. inside altera folder the folder for modelsim also was named modelsim_ase. then i checked "programs features" in windows and also there was Modelsim-Altera starter edition 14.1.0.186. uninstalled it, downloaded separate modelsim installer and now it really launches Modelsim Altera Starter Edition no license errors and things. actually it's not only me. many people complain here about that. god knows what that might be; windows issue... installer issue... flimsy fingers click something somewhere or a single tick box goes crazy before installation... but happily now we know the workaround. too bad i lost half of my working day on that. by the way; if i remember correctly Quartus 13.1 DVD did similar thing to me few months ago....

They fixed it. It seems like a bug and there's a patch to solve this. Here's what i found:
