This might be the dumbest question but I just want to clarify.

Are nios ii ide and nios ii eds the same?

The Nios II IDE is a legacy tool, I can't remember if the 'EDS' name was around back then. But the short answer is no they are not the same thing.

The EDS (embedded design suite) is the new Nios II software build tools (command line), Nios II software build tools for eclipse (this replaces the IDE), and other stuff... Since you are asking I'm guessing that you are new to Nios II and as a result I recommend avoiding the Nios II IDE and sticking to the new software build tools for eclipse instead. Same goes for the hardware side, I would avoid SOPC Builder and use Qsys instead.

now that is enlightening. Thank you very much.

However, avoiding the NIOS II IDE and SOPC Builder is a bit difficult. While looking at the examples and demonstrations from my newly acquired DE2 and D5M camera module, the instructions are reffering to those tools. I even downloaded the new versions from the TERASIC website but the instructions say the same.

[sigh] I guess i'll just start from scratch. Do you, by any chance, know a step by step tutorial for NIOS II EDS and Qsys? I mean those tutorials that are meant for real "begginers"...

Thanks,

Glenn

Well lucky for you those legacy tools are still shipped. When you install the Nios II EDS the old Nios II IDE is installed with it if you choose to enable it during the install. I think in the latest ACDS installers it is automatically installed.
