i found
--- Quote Start --- JP11 is used when you are happy with your design, and have told the tools to convert the .sof file to a .pof file via a check box selection) and wish to have it perminently stored on the board in the EPCS1 PROM. --- Quote End --- at this thread http://www.alteraforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4826 i just dont so understand about how to check the box selection! i cant find it, if i directly add .pof to download, it will show the "cant add target EPCS4 to device chain while in current programing mode" and i did connect my jtag cable to jp11 port, if i add .sof to download, will fail too! can someone give me a hand?! i really urgent to present for my final year project!- Mark as New

--- Quote Start --- cant add target EPCS4 to device chain while in current programing mode --- Quote End --- You apparently tried to access EPCS4 in JTAG programming mode. That can't work, you must set the Quartus Programmer to AS programming. P.S.: I also wondered, if the UP3 reference manual possibly misses an explanation of the different configuration methods and their particular purpose. I think, it basically has it at page 13 of the Version 01 manual.

thanks FVM to reply my thread...
in AS programming, i even cant to download into up3 at both jp11 & jp12. can not detect any device chain. and it even can not change any device also at AS mode. if in jtag mode, add .sof file, we can select the epcs1 device, but can not to download also due to the .sof will be unknown after added or change device. really needing someone to help me... thankssss- Mark as New

As a first point, the POF file is generated automatically by Quartus, when AS configuration is selected. You may also want to enable bitstream compression to reduce the image size.
--- Quote Start --- in AS programming, i even cant to download into up3 at both jp11 & jp12. can not detect any device chain. and it even can not change any device also at AS mode. --- Quote End --- Sorry, this sounds confused. It's very clear in the UP3 reference manual, that JP11 is intended for AS programming. Also, as said there's no device chain in AS programming, just a single device accessed by Quartus programmer. The Quartus Programmer has a mode: Combo Box on top of tool window, it has to be set to active serial programming instead of jtag. To my opinion, Quartus Programmer operation is really intuitive, but you'll find verbose software handbooks, if you want.- Mark as New

What's the exact error message in Quartus programmer? There are several steps involved, e. g. reading the device ID, erasing the AS device, programming, verify, each may fail.
AS programming can be done with ByteBlaster II (has been bundled originally with UP3, I think) or USBBlaster, but don't work with previous ByteBlaster MV.- Mark as New

Yes, it's O.K. for AS programming, I've often used it.

What's the exact error message? Is it:
--- Quote Start --- Error: Can't recognize silicon ID for device 1 --- Quote End --- This normally indicates a hardware problem of the programming adapter or the configuration device. Revision 01 UP3 has an EPCS1 in a DIL socket. Is it mounted correctly at all?- Mark as New

yes, it is showing Error: Can't recognize silicon ID for device 1
i can find u15(epcs1) on my bottom board! but while in AS mode, the .pof was automatically set to epcs4... if change device to epsc1, the new .pof will be unknown, then will not be able to download!- Mark as New

The two problems are unrelated, I think. EPCS1 has to be selected in Quartus device options to generate the right *.pof file type. This must be done anyway.
"Can't recognize silicon ID" is another issue. As I said, I assume a hardware problem. With some boards, there may be special setup issues than can cause AS access failure, but I'm not aware with the UP3 board.- Mark as New
