Cannot upgrade Intel Rapid Storage Technology on Windows 10

When I attempt to upgrade Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST), the installer fails while attempting to uninstall the old version. I am currently running Intel Rapid Storage Technology 15.7.3.1019 distributed by Dell for my XPS 9560. I am running Windows 10 x64 with all Microsoft updates (Fall Creators Update). Upgrades to the latest RST 5.7.5.1025 version are failing during the uninstall of the previous RST 15.7.3.1019 version. When I attempt to uninstall RST 15.7.3.1019 directly from Settings "Apps & features", I get:

The corresponding log in Event Viewer->Windows Logs->Application gives:

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Package Cache\{409CB30E-E457-4008-9B1A-ED1B9EA21140}\Setup.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Package Cache\{409CB30E-E457-4008-9B1A-ED1B9EA21140}\Setup.exe" on line 0. Invalid Xml syntax.

Here are the registry entries from regedit for the existing installation:

I also attempted to install the latest Intel release 15.8.1.1007, but it also cannot uninstall the old version. The IntelRST.log is attached.

Any advice on how to uninstall the existing version so that I can upgrade to the latest? Thanks!

Hello mliberty1,

I understand you are trying to update Intel® Rapid Storage Technology software, but you are getting an error during the uninstall process.

Let me apologize for any inconvenience this issue may be causing to you.

Have you tried installing the Intel RST version Dell* provides on this link? http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=66MG5 http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=66MG5

The drivers Dell* provides on their website have been tested and validated to work fine in your specific computer model. If the installation of the Dell* RST driver fails then there might be an issue with the operating system itself.

Regards,

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your reply. I have tried installing the Dell RST driver that you mentioned. However, the problem occurs during the uninstall of the existing RST 15.7.3.1019, which was provide by Dell. The uninstaller fails with the errors I listed above regardless of whether I try to uninstall through Windows "Apps & features" or through either the new Dell RST version or new Intel RST version. Any advice on how to safely uninstall the existing RST when the RST uninstaller is not working? Thanks!

Hello mliberty1,

I am sorry to hear you are still having issues with Intel® Rapid Storage Technology software.

The way we recommend uninstalling it is through Windows* Apps & features. If the uninstall process is failing then the issue might be related to the Windows* registry that may have gotten corrupted. The Intel RST version Dell* provides should install and work fine in your computer because it has been validated by Dell*.

If the issue started happening recently you may try running Windows* System Restore. If the issue has been for a while the best option would be reinstalling the operating system. This link will show you how to run Windows* System Restore https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options

You may also try contacting Dell* in order to check if they can provide more advanced troubleshooting steps for this issue. This link will give you their contact information http://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/us/en/04/contactus/dynamic http://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/us/en/04/contactus/dynamic
