Move RAID 1 volume to larger drives procedure does not work!

I have a Windows Ultimate 7 32 bit machine with Intel 520 SSDs (240GB) and I want to upgrade to a set of Intel 520 SSD 480GB drives. The Intel Rapid Storage software is version 11.7.0.1013.

I followed the Intel procedure precisely but when I got to step 14 which instructs the user to resize the drive there is no unallocated space and the drive shows the same size as with the 240GB drives. When I open Intel Rapid Storage using Ctrl-I at reboot the utility shows 447.1 GB for the drive size.

I managed to get back to the same state I was at before starting by rebuilding with original drives but I am down to only 15GB free and desperately need to do this upgrade. Can anyone help?

In order to better assist you, could you please provide the system report?

Also, please provide a screen shot of disk management, while all the SSD's are connected.

Any further questions, please let me know.

Hi Alberto,

Thank you for responding.

Just to be clear the current state of the system is back to two 240GB SSDs in RAID 1. But the screenshot looks identical to what I saw yesterday at step 14 with only the 480 GB drive connected:

Here is the System Report: Please note that I just now generated this and the status is as I mentioned above (2) 240GB SSDs in RAID 1

Hi Alberto,

This morning I removed the exiting RAID 1 disk set and put the 480GB back in the box. I wanted to get a screenshot during startup that shows the 480GB drive in place. This is the only drive in the system now. As you can see the drive size is recognized correctly at this stage however when I look at it in Windows Disk Management utility it looks identical to the screenshot in my previous post... no unallocated space to allocate. I tried a 3rd party disk management tool as well with the same result.

Hi Judgester: Thank you very much for sharing that information and for providing the pictures.

In order to try to fix this problem, please install a newer version of the Intel® RST, it is version 12.9:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23496/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-?product=55005 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23496/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-?product=55005

If the problem persists after that, please try a BIOS update to the latest version, which is 0110, but do that gradually, using the following order:

0095, 0100, 0102, 0105, 0108, 0110

On the link below you will see the instructions to do the BIOS update using the F7 method:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/000005850.html http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/000005850.html

And on the next link you will find all the BIOS versions needed:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/59506/Intel-Desktop-Board-DH77KC https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/59506/Intel-Desktop-Board-DH77KC

Please let me know the results of trying the steps above.

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Hi Alberto,

Thank you for your input.

I will complete the process you have outlined and alert you regarding the results after each step.

I do have one question about getting started. Do I need to reformat the 480GB SSD that I have already rebuilt the original array to? This is the one that shows the same size as the 240GB SSD in Disk Management software (i.e. no unallocated space).

Thank you,

Jim

Hi Judgester: You are welcome. Perfect, take your time.

In regard to your question, it is not necessary to format them, the RST application will do that automatically when it is transferring the information.

Any questions, please let me know.

Hi Alberto,

Sorry for the delay, been very busy.

I upgraded to Intel® RST version 12.9. No issues there. I opened RST to make sure the RAID arrangement was still ok and that Intel® RST was in fact now version 12.9. All green at this point. I did not do any BIOS updates, hoping to avoid this if possible.

I swapped out one of the 240GB with the 480GB drive I had tried to clone to before, put everything back together and restarted. I opened RST from the Windows start menu. Now the two drives show in two separate RAID groups and there is no Rebuild to another disk option to be found anywhere. The larger disk did show as 447GB in RST (the usable area on a 480GB SSD).

So I am stuck again. I guess I could plug in the completely clean 480GB drive to see if I can then rebuild to that or perhaps I should reformat the 480 GB drive I have been using and leave the clean one in the box until everything it working correctly.

Let me know what my next step should be.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Alberto,

Below is the current system report. The current state of the system is that I am back to using the original 2 240GB HDs in RAID1 all working properly.

Let me know if you need a system report with the one of the 240GB HDs switched out with the 480 GB HD I have been working with.

Hi Judgester: Thank you very much for providing those details.

In this case, please try the steps below:

1. Break RAID 1 volume from Ctrl+i menu

2. Boot into Windows* and use 3rd party tool to clone the hard drive

3. Once the information has been transferred to the larger hard drive create RAID 1 volume from scratch

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards

Hi Alberto,

Let me make sure I understand...

Open RST utility, click on the RAID array, click the Advanced link, then click disable to disable the RAID functionality on the two 240GB drives.

Then use a 3rd party program to clone one of the 240GB to a 480GB drive.

Install only the 480GB drive into the machine and make sure everything works.

Add the second 480GB drive and rebuild the array.

Is this correct? Do you have a recommendation for the 3rd party software?

Comment... this seems like an abrupt change from trying to use RST to solve the problem. I am nervous now about our other machines using RST should they ever need upgrading. Can you give me any explanation as to why RST will not accomplish what we need it to do?

Jim

Hi Judgester: Please try the following steps:

Only with the following hard drive connected, which is the one showing on the control "I" menu:

SSDSC2BW48 DA410400N64805GN

1. Please get into Control "i" menu again use the "Reset to Non RAID" option

2. Then Boot to Windows and look for disk management to create a bigger partition

3. Once you do that, turn the PC off, install the other 480 GB hard drive and create the RAID 1 from scratch from RST

4. Please use the link below to do that, page 30:
