Why no X79 RAID support with Intel's RST(e) v11/v12 series drivers?

Many users with an X79 chipset RAID system are already using the Intel RST(e) v11 or v12 series drivers instead of the regular RSTe v3.x.x.xxxx ones, because the v11/v12 drivers obviously

  • are running rock stable with X79 RAID systems,
  • boost the X79 RAID performance and
  • give X79 RAID0 users the chance to get TRIM into their RAID array.

Only disadvantages:

  1. There are no F6 Intel RAID drivers v11/v12 available, which can be used by X79 chipset RAID users, who want to do a fresh install of Windows 8 in EFI mode.
  2. The driver installation from within an already running Windows OS has to be forced, because the DEV_2826 support is missing within the original iaStorAC.inf file.
  3. Unfortunately the RST Console software v11/v12 series cannot be installed at all due to the missing support of the "Intel(R) C600 Series Chipset SATA RAID Controller". Bad consequence: The popular feature "Write Back Caching", which gives RAID users a far better write performance, can not be enabled,

Since the original Intel RST(e) drivers of the v11 and v12 series do already support C600 Series Chipset SATA AHCI Controllers, it would be a good idea, if Intel would add the native support of the related SATA RAID Controllers as well.

Question:

What is the reason why the support of Intel's C600 Series Chipset SATA RAID Controllers is missing within the actual RST(e) driverpacks of the v11.x.x.xxxx and v12.x.x.xxxx series?

Hi all,

What happens is that C600 is a Server chipset so; the software that will recognize all of the features is Intel RSTe. The OROM that is used with X79 chipsets is not an iRST OROM so; iRST driver was not designed to work with that type of OROMs.

F6 drivers for RAID are going to be released only for Intel RSTe.

To all:

Everyone should visit the Intel website, and when they ask for feedback, ask them when they will do something to make the X79 act like a 7 series chipset, I do, but so far they haven't cared,.

I have also asked about Ivy bridge-e, getting sick of waiting for the 8% gain and PCI-E 3.0 that should have been on the sandy.

Hi guys,

just found these new RSTe drivers

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23257 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23257

I'm at work and cant check that the x79 is supported. But look at the readme: TRIM support in RAID 0.

Interesting!

Fernado, I'm totally agree with you.

I set up 3 workstations for editing (Adobe Premiere pro CS6.0)

2 ASUS P9X79 WS - 2SSD OCZ and 1 P9X79 Pro -2 HDD WD RED.

And on 3 stations, after copying all footage, Raid1 failed,

and I had corrupted files.

I tried even with new bios 4404 / Sata option rom 3.8.0.1029 and IRSTe 3.7/3.8.

I add that I disabled Marvell rom too and I have my ssd system on Intel too (sata3) not in the picture below

Everything seems to be good even if ....after copies:

same issues!

I'm really disappointed, So students are returned to old workstations with Asus P5QPRO iCH7 where the raid is good.

For the moment, I disabled Raid and put on AHCi.

I'll try to mount Raid on Marvell 9128 Controller instead of.

I hope we'll have an answer...

Bye

Steph

As per the release notes of Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology 12.8 you can use this version on the systems featuring the X79 express chipset.

You can get this version from here:

Thanks Diego_Intel.

Does Rst 12.8 work with raid C600+ or just AHCi?

The content of the Release Notes published by Intel with the Intel RST 12.8 is not correct regarding this point.

As all previously released Intel RST drivers v10/v11/v12 the latest Intel RST drivers v12.8.x.xxxx do not support Intel(R) C600 Series Chipset RAID Controllers. Only C600 Series Chipset AHCI Controllers are supported by them.

The last point is absolutely misleading, because Intel(R) X79 RAID systems are only supported, if the Intel X79 SATA RAID Controller, which originally has the DeviceID DEV_2826, has been switched to DEV_2822 by a special BIOS option. Not all mainboard manufacturers offer this BIOS option for their X79 chipset boards..

In my bios I didn't disable SMART Statue Check...maybe I should...

No other options with Raid Controller P9X79WS:

12.8.0.1016 are now WHQL and out on ASUS Download

@ greg.stephen:

Since you BIOS screenshot shows, that the Intel SATA Controller of your X79 mainboard has been set to "AHCI", you are not affected at all by the X79 RAID incompatibility of the Intel RST drivers v12.8.

So you will be able to get the RST drivers v12.8.x.xxxx installed without any problem.

Which Intel RST resp. RSTe RAID ROM/SataDriver version did you use to create the RAID array?

If you used an RSTe RAID ROM or SataDriver v3.x.x.xxxx and want to install the newest Intel RST drivers v12.8.6.1000, you should look into the start post of this thread: http://www.win-raid.com/t11f23-Modded-Intel-AHCI-and-RAID-Drivers.html http://www.win-raid.com/t11f23-Modded-Intel-AHCI-and-RAID-Drivers.html

I used V3.7 IRSTe to install sata raid driver (Sata O.rom 3.8.0.1029) and so I made raid array with it.

Because 11.7 couldn't launch with C600+/C220+.

But I had some corrupted files after copying 30GB of data.

Have you some corrupted files too with raid X79 ?

I don't have an X79 Chipset mainboard, but I have seen the feedback from many users with an X79 Chipset RAID0 system, that they got better results with a modded v12 RST OROM/drivers combination than with the original v3 RSTe OROM/drivers. combo.

thanks I'll check your version 12.8 if there is a better stability than 3.8 in raid1.

For the moment, I reinstalled Array RAID1 2xWD1TB with Asus P9X79 Pro Intel Orom 3.5 with RTSe 3.8.

No errors, I copied 80GB.

new:

I changed the driver of C600+/C220+ to 3.8 too.

Because it didn't install the 3.8 driver even if I deleted old IRSTe (3.7).

So I did manually.

and I put 512o on cluster size in windows instead of 4ko by defaut.

I don't know if it changes someting but for the moment, it's ok...

To be continued...

Hi guys

Can someone please confirm if there is issues with the 3.8 version drivers. I have 2 Samsung Evo 250gb in raid 1 that continuously get parity errors when I do verification. The problem is much worse after a reboot.

Hello MrFoox,

I tried with 2xHDD WD 1To in raid1 and 3.8.

I put 512Bytes (octets) into windows when Formatting HDD.

And no errors.

But with others computers p9x79ws ans 2 ssd ocz raid1,

I'll check it after the students finishing their editing of documentary.

For the moment I let only one ssd and put in AHCi.

Bye
