Does anybody know if the Seate Barracuda ES.2 can be used with SSR212MC2 now that it has had a firmware update (AN05) to fix problems with SAS controllers?

Dear Guest,

It would have been a lot easier had you specified the exact drive model you are trying to plug into you MC2. Anyway, I have attached the latest revision of THOL (Tested Hardware & Operating System List) with this response where you will find the list of supported Seagate SAS drives ES.2 from page 15 onwards. In 3.5" Seagate SAS drives, you will find a few Cheetah drive version that are compatible while in 2.5", some Savvio and Momentus models are tested and verified. However for more information, you can directly access the product page for SSR212MC/R.

Otherwise you can simply provide us the exact model of the SAS drive you're trying to use and we'll let you know. Feel free to contact us anytime.

Thanks Javed,

Sorry for the vague post I think it was late at the time, thanks for thr THOL the only Seagate Barracuda drives on there are the old ES models. The model I'm interested to know if works with the AN05 firmware update is the Seagate Barracuda ES.2 750GB SATA 3.0Gb/s http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=barracuda-es-2-sata-3-0-gb/s-750-gb-hard-drive-st3750330ns&vgnextoid=52cfc27bebb43110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD&vgnextchannel=b655f141e7f43110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD&reqPage=Model ST3750330NS , if there is anyway to check with the validatio people or Xyratex that would be really good to know.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for the drive model however as you mentioned earlier in the post that it is a SAS drive, the drive here mentioned is a SATA drive. Now as for it's compatibility, I have not tested the drive myself and neither it is found in THOL however I have forwarded it to a few associates who are also working on SSR212MC2 to see if any of them have had the chance of working with this drive model. This drive model might work however let me clarify one thing to you which is, I would not recommend you to try any HDD model that is not listed in the THOL for 2 simple reasons:

  1. The drive may not work at all.

  2. The drive may work but might give problems and once it does that, Intel will not be responsible to provide support over that.

One thing! Are you bound to use these drives with your SSR212MC2, if not; why don't you try the other SATA 3.0Gb/s drive of capacity 750GB that is listed in THOL?

Dear Guest,

When talking about Channel products, you can go upto 7000 series MP Xeon based systems namely http://serverconfigurator.intel.com/compare.aspx?CategoryID=3 S7000FC4UR or S7000FC4URE where you can have upto 4 Quad Core Xeon 7200 & 7300 series processors in one server. Now if you want to go beyond 4 CPUs in one system, I'd like to dig more into this and it would be more appropriate if you could open up a new thread stating your exact requirement as to why you need this so that we can better address your needs according to your requirements since if your requirement is extreme power, perhaps we can recommend something better.

If you have installed E5410 (SLANW) processors, ensure the following:

  1. These processors have a Thermal Design Power of 80 watts.

  2. These processors are based on the 45nm manufacturing process. Your

Intel® Server Board requires BIOS version 84 or later to support this

    processor.
  3. Intel has been updating its current lineup of Intel® Server Boards and

Intel® Server Systems in order to support the new Intel® Xeon®

processors based on 45nm technology. Refer to the http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/CS-027912.htm new product order codes to ensure you order the correct product.
  4. The Intel® Server System SC5400RA does not support these processors.

If you still encounter any problems, first access and check the advisories and update if advised otherwise let us know directly so that we can help you with the continuing problem.

Dear Alex,

The processor specs are known to us already, all you need to do is download the latest BIOS/FRUSDR/Firmware for S5000VSA and upgrade your system since E5410 come in only one sSpec which is SLANW and is http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/CS-022346.htm compatible with S5000VSA and there should not be any difference of stepping or voltage between the two processors you are installing on your motherboard provided both are SLANW. You are required to upgrade BIOS and firmware because S5000VSA is an older board and for it to support MP Xeons, the BIOS & firmware upgrades are required.

Mostly people tend to upgrade BIOS and firmware without giving README file a look which comes along while it is very important that you go through the README before you upgrade your BIOS or firmware. Try the upgrade once again as you say that you have already done that and let us know what happens.

Alex,

What model is your motherboard?

BTW I rechecked all possible causes and well let's just say that provided the motherboard is compatible as you have already said so and even after the upgrades, error still exists, here are two things you might want to do.

1- Check out this URL and look into http://www.intel.com/support/processors/xeon/index.htm?iid=products_xeon5000+tab_support KNOWN ISSUES & SOLUTIONS for a possible answer to your problem.

2- If you are sure that both the processors are exactly the same specs even the stepping, and the board is compliant, contact your local reseller from whom you got the processor and board and tell him to contact support for a possible warranty replacement lest right parts were ordered.

Keep me posted about it.

I would like to get the detailled cache specification for the intel Xeon 5410 (quad-core) processor.

Indeed, I found conflicting statements in the datasheet (http://download.intel.com/design/xeon/datashts/318589.pdf),

- page 9: "Some key features include on-die, primary 32-kB instruction cache and 32-kB write-back data cache in each core and 12 MB (2 x 6MB) Level 2 cache"

- table 1-1, page 10: "L1: 32KB per die (16KB per core) instruction, 32KB per die (16KB per core) data ; L2: 2x6 MB shared"

My assumption is that each core has :

- a 32kB, private L1 instruction cache

- a 32kB, private L1 data cache

- a 6 MB unified L2 cache shared with another core (cores 0 & 1 share a cache and core 2 & 3 share another cache)

Is this correct ?

Many thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi .. I followed up on your inquiry and also found it somewhat confusing. Here is the information i found and a simple block diagram. Your assumption was accurate.

Each core (4 total) has both a 32KB data and instruction level L1 cache

The L2 is a total of 12MB that is split into a shared 6MB cache per die pair.

Hope that helps. Chris

Dear Guest,

T5500 is a C2D Mobile Processor while E7200 is a C2D Desktop Processor.

I have listed various processors under E7200 and T5500, the difference between manufacturing technology, FSB, socket pins, stepping, L2 Cache and frequencies is pretty evident.

I am looking at creating a dense rendering solution for our business and I have decided I like the Intel X38ML and the Intel Xeon 3360. Unfortunately the X38ML seems to be out of stock everywhere. I would like to know if Intel is still manufacturing this board and if not is there a new solution of the same form factor that is available?

Thanks in advance,

Isaac LaBauve

Thanks for your questions, here's what I found out. Both the Intel X38ML Server Board and Intel® Server System SR1520ML (contains two of the X38ML boards in a 1U system with high efficiency power supplies) are still in production. Due to large-demand, inventory levels of the X38ML board are very low, but additional supply should be available in mid-October. Please work with your distributor to place an order so that any orders can be filled as quickly as possible. Intel does have supply immediately available of the SR1520ML system.

Hi .. The http://www.intel.com/Products/Server/Chipsets/5100-Memory-Controller-Hub/5100-Memory-Controller-Hub-overview.htm Intel 5100 chipset does not support single core processors. This chipset supports the 5000 series processors which include dual core or quad-core Xeon processors.

The detailed data sheet is http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/318378.pdf here listing the supported CPU versions

Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5100 series

Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5300 series

Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5200 series

Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5400 series

It also supports the Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9400
