Intel S5000PSL support for E5420 CPU ?

Hi,

I have a Intel S5000PSL Server mainboard and like to upgrade the CPU's to Intel's E5420.

The online description say that BIOS version 84 or later wil support the series 5200 and 5400 CPU's.

If I put them on the board it wont boot and I receive error codes like:

19A = Fatal Voltage mismatch

There is also the thing about non-refresh board wich is not entire clear for me.

Is this a hardware or software limitation problem?

Yes there are hardware requirements to use Xeon 5400 series processor. You'll need to check the PBA# on the board. See http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/CS-028540.htm Intel® Xeon® Processors 5400 and 5200 support

I was looking at the list you pointed me to and it says:

PBA E11025-302 or later

Mine is PBA D44771-804

Why is this not possible, the boards looks exactly the same!

Is this due a hardware limitation?

From what I know the Xeon 5400 series CPUs has different power requirements, which is only available on the "Refresh" version boards.

Can someone explain what they have been changed on the boards electrically or software?

If I look at the boards both are the same!
