Hello CTowl,

You can check the list of compatible products for the Intel® Storage Expander RES3TV360 here:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/compatible-products.html?pagePath=/content/www/us/en/products/servers/raid/storage-expanders/raid-expander-res3tv360&productId=81278&heading=true&categorytype=Intel%C2%AE%20Server%20Board%20S2600CW%20Family%20&categoryid=78561&

You can also check:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/servers/raid/storage-expanders/raid-expander-res3tv360.html

We also recommend contacting the manufacturer of the controller card and check if they have tested the Intel® Storage Expander RES3TV360

Hi Sergio,

A little guidance would be appreciated. My controller card is from Broadcom, LSI 9460-16i. About 6 years ago I built a BU / server chassis of 24 drives. Previously, I successfully daisy chained 2 RES2SV240 expanders from the 9460 to control 2 RAID assemblies in the external chassis. A few weeks ago one of the RES2SV240 expanders died taking a few HDD with it. I decided to upgrade by replacing the 2 6G expanders with a single 12G and to replace all of my 5-6 year old drives with larger but still 6G units. All drives are Toshiba 8TB 4Kn SATA. When the drives in the chassis are configured into arrays the RAID VDs became unstable with individual drives becoming Unconfigured Bad and missing. After making the drives Unconfigured Good, the arrays are sometimes recoverable via the Import Foreign function. This instability is only in the chassis, the RAIDs in the PC are stable. I have not mixed SAS & SATA nor 6Gb\s & 12Gb\s drives in the same RAID. The controller and both expander cards are 12G with the chassis and the enclosed drives being 6G.

Am I correct in this assumption?

I think that my problem might lie here. I used 2 8743 cables to link from the 9460 to the RES3SV288 in my PC and used the 2 external 8644 ports of this expander to connect to the RES3TV360 in the external chassis. That is, I used 2 parral links to daisy chain the Expanders where I think I should have used only one.

Does this plan make sense? Suggestions?

I plan to re-cable the PC and chassis with single 12G cables from the controller to the individual expanders.

All components are well within required temperature ranges, the PS are 150% of recommended capacity and all cables are snug in their connectors.

Thanks. Cal

FYI - I did not get an email with your reply 4 days ago only your email of today.

Hello CTwol;

The LSI9460-16i controller is similar to our Tri-Mode controllers, those work with expander cards. Nevertheless, we cannot guarantee compatibility with Broadcom cards.

Daisy chaining is possible so that should not be an issue.

The expanders carry out a passthrough function so that it is transparent, what really controls the setup is the RAID controller in the end.

Although, we do recommend keeping them updated (Firmware), so please share the below links for FW updates:

For RES2SV240:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/21686/RAID-Expander-RES2SV240-RES2CV240-RES2CV360-Firmware?product=49596

For RES3TV360:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27884/Intel-RAID-Expander-RES3FV288-RES3TV360-Firmware

Do bear in mind that since no third party controller has been validated, the update is to be performed in the presence of an Intel RAID adapter.

Our strong recommendation would be to get a compatible Intel RAID adapter to avoid issues.
