Need 1440 x 900 resolution

Several years ago I built a PC based on an Intel Mothrboard with integrated graphics (Intel extreme graphics 2). My current monitor is a CRT which I would like to replace with a 19 inch wide screen LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1440 x 900. This resolution does not appear in the "List all Modes" window. However, I have not installed the latest BIOS and driver. My question is: If I install the latest BIOS and/or video driver will a resolution of 1440 x 900 become available? Intel has stopped supporting this motherboard and therefore will not provide this information. I would very much appreciate any help.

My current configuration is a follows:
OS: Windows XP Pro in a dual boot configuration (fully patched)
Mother Board: D865GBFL with Intel 82865G Graphics controller
BIOS: BF86510A86A.0071.P22
Driver: 6.14.10.3943 dated 11/2/2004

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270 (Small form factor) with an integrated Intel 82865G Graphics controller and have recently purchsed a Xerox LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1440x900. This resolution was not in the list, so I downloaded the latest driver from Intel and still no joy. I then installed the monitor drivers and went back to display properties and the new resolution was listed. I selected this (it prompted for a reboot but I cancelled) and all was well. The display looked great and was pin sharp. A couple of hours later I performed a reboot and the diaply reset to another resolution and the 1440x900 selection has dispeared from the available list! I then installed Powerstrip to try to get a custom resolution but cannot select "custom resolutions" because apparently the Intel 82865G does not support this function.

So my questions are as follows:
1. I know the hardware supports this resolution (as I had it working for 2 hours) so how do I get this back?
2. I sthere any way to "trick" the driver to allow the selection of this resolution. (Where does the drop down get it's list from: eg registry, txt file) and can I try adding it.
3. Why did it allow me to select it temporarily?

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received as I am running out of time to send the monitor back (which I am very loathed to do as I have seen it working and it looks really sweet)

It's possible. I'd give it a shot.

If it doesn't work, there are other options.

Can you see the EDID with a tool like MonInfo?

If not, can you at least find a Linux Modeline for your monitor for 1440x900?

You can conceivably get this done with the IEGD drivers if you have the aforementioned information, though I don't know if you lose any functionality with the IEGDs as opposed to the normal downloads.

Thanks for your reply. I think that I will update the normal Intel file(s). I have not purchased the monitor yet and will rely on the List All Modes window to see what resolutions are potentially available. My understanding is that there are potentially three things to update:

1: BIOS (which may or may not have video information)

2: The INF file

3: The video driver itself.

My question is: In what order should I do this? The workstation has been rock solid for several years and I would want to avoid doing unneeded updates. It 's been years since I have done this sort of thing and appreciate your help.

Problem is the regular driver for 865 does not support custom resolutions, only the IEGD. So unless 1680x1050 is recognized by the regular drivers, you're left with a BIOS hack or the IEGD.

It appears that Intel's latest driver doesn't support 1440x900; however, you can correct this deficiency. Refer to following site:
