I am having a major problem running the game Second life on my intel graphic card.
It has pretty good speed and graphics, BUT, i can not handle more then 3 people on my screen or i'll crash, I have the 965 chipset with the 965 chipset graphic accelerator, running at 32 i believe. It has its moments where i can do anything with out fear of crashing, but most of the time i fail. And crash. Is their a better accelerator i can use to hold Second life better?
Thank you for reading and helping me. ^_^

I've lost the attribution of this, but it works for me o my Fujitsu T2010 with the965(up to a point). I still crash from time to time, frequently after a teleport. This is with the 15.7 driver.

----------

While I probably would not recommend the X61 as a great Second Life platform, I have succeeded in making it work. The X61 uses the Intel GM965 chipset with the X3100 Graphics Media Accelerator. I am running 32-bit Vista and the latest Intel beta drivers (15.6b). The fix will require you to track down the settings.xml file and modify it. Although it is unlikely that you will do anything harmful to your computer or Vista, all of the usual do-so-at-your-own-risk warnings apply.

Out of the box, Second Life will allow you to log in but will crash immediately before displaying the world. The first problem is that the OpenGL driver claims to support object occlusion but it doesn't (at least, not properly). The trick is to turn off Object Occlusion.

Now we come to the second problem. Object Occlusion is an option in the Debug menus which you can't get to until you are in-world. Fortunately, this option is stored in the settings.xml file. Once Second Life has started it creates a settings.xml file in the UsersAppData directory tree. In my case this is UsersmynameAppDataRoamingSecondLifeuser_sett ingssettings.xml. You will have to manually add the command to disable Object Occlusion to this file. The lines to add are:

Open settings.xml with notepad and paste the two lines into the section (somewhere after the second line but before the final line). Save the file and have fun running Second Life! By the way, there may be multiple directories under AppData. I have three: Local, LocalLow, and Roaming. My SecondLife directory is under Roaming since I am running on a wireless link. You may have to search a bit to find the directory which has the SecondLife subdirectory.

Make sure you are using the latest driver and the latest Second Life or WindLight client. Another thing you could try is to go into SL's settings and disable Occlusion Query (as a test).

Oi, that helps but it merely slows down the time i crash. I mean, i can hold more people now, which is great! But i still crash..
So i must wait for a better driver to come out correct? I've been hearing that i should wait for a newer version. So alittle comfirmation would be great!
Thank you for helping me, and everyone else ^^

My brother plays Second life as well, and he has a intel 945 chipset, but he doest crash and has a pretty primmy A.V
Hows an older version hold SL like so? while Intel 965 is more...Newer?..

I too was shocked and dismayed to discover that new, supposedly improvedgraphics do not allow me to run Second Life. After dealing with a very unhelpful Intel Support Person for several day (he basically said tough luck and blew me off) I read that the Windlight Viewer is more forgiving of Intel's lousy graphics card. I downloaded and voila! I am back in SL! Runs very well, only downside is the words in IM window are a bit tweaky, but still readable. I love it! Good luck - too bad Intel couldn't find some drivers to fix this for all the people who studpidly expectedthat an upgrade from 945 to 965 would actually be an upgrade!

Hi,

I was planning to "upgrade" to 965. .But after reading your posts, I am now having second thoughts. I guess I have to think about that again. Thanks for sharing your experiences here.

I just purchased a new computer with the 965 chip running Vista, and cannot find the
AppData folders. Can someone point me in the right direction? With XP I did modify as needed and cleared that darn hidden cache as well, but I am thoroughly lost in Vista as to where it is located.
