VGA monitor notification

I've got an embedded system using Intel945GM (GMA950 graphics) chipset running WinXP, what I'dlike is for some software I've got to be notified each time the user attaches a monitor to the secondary D-sub 15 VGA connector.

This actually works when using certain motherboards, but others it does not. When it works, as soon as the monitor is attached, I hear the "Device Notification" chime (same on as when a thumb drive is plugged in) and when I have the device manager dialog up, it refreshes and adds "Plug n Play" monitor devices into its list.

On the motherboards where it doesn't work, the "Device Notification" doesn't occur until I either bring up the Control Panel's display properties or enable the 2nd head, which is not something I'd like to have to do.

The graphics driver versions are the same on all systems, but one difference is they use different video bios versions? Could this be something controlled by the video bios? Doesn't seem like it's easy to flash the video bios along, from what I've read online I have to get a full BIOS update from the manufacturer that includes the updated video bios.

Anyone have thoughts in this arena?

Thanks
