Version Control and IDE

We are using PVCS Version Manager for software version control, and I have CVF 6.5A installed on my Win2000 Pro PC.

On my previous PC running Win95, PVCS installation hooked itself into the CVF Visual Studio IDE and Version control menus and toolbars were available.

I now have a Win2000 Pro PC, and cannot get any of these menus and the version control toolbar just doesn't exist. In fact, I have to disable the PVCS VM IDE link to avoid having CVF crash *on exit*.

Merant (PVCS supplier) do not list CVF as a supported IDE but do list MS VC++ and VB6 using Visual Studio 6. Am I naive in expecting PVCS VM to work from the CVF IDE? Are there any other forum readers using PVCS VM from the CVF IDE?

If it claims it works with VC++ 6, it should work with CVF - this is all Microsoft code that we just redistribute.

Thanks for the update. I suspect that my problem may be related to a SP issue with the Visual Studio environment. I have refrained from installing any VS SP updates to my 6.5A installation (If it ain't broke, don't fix it), but now may be the time to do this. Do you have any advice on locations for VS SPs (a URL would do) and any subsequent steps particular to V6.5a after I install the SP.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/sp/vs6sp5/default.asp is Visual Studio SP5. After installing that, reinstall the 6.5A update. That should be all you need.

I downloaded VS SP5 and executed the setup command. The setup stalls at the point where it looks for VS components on my system.

I don't have any of the MS languages installed; how do I tell the installer to proceed? Our IT people have VB6 licences - should I do a VB6 installation so I can update my CVF VS6 environment?

Graham,

If you don't have any of the MS language products installed, the Visual Studio SPs won't install, and you don't need them. 6.1 got you SP3. Installing VB won't help, as the SP won't touch the bits that CVF uses.

I appreciate that (in theory) MS Visual Studio SPs later that SP3 should not make any difference. However, I am chasing a version control problem that (in theory) shouldn't occur. I think I will try the VB6 install/SP5 upgrade anyway, and see if the version control links can be restored.

Steve: Further to my previous post, I installed an MS Visual Strudio language (C++) and MS Visual Source Safe, updated VS to SP5, and re-installed CVF 6.5A . At this point version control menus and toolbars pointing to VSS were available.

After re-installing PVCS, the version control menus and toolbars disappeared, both for CVF and C++. The problem is now firmly back with the PVCS installation. My reason for persisting with PVCS is that PVCS archives downloaded from an OpenVMS platform which is being retired (sigh!) were immediately usable, and I wanted to continue using these archives.
