Very noisy depth image

I just received an R200 camera. I'm testing with librealsense on OSX and experiencing very a bad quality depth image. I also checked from Windows 8.1, downloaded DCM and the Realsense SDK with similar results.

Video recording of a room corner from about 2 meters: https://youtu.be/B7J5Y5eqUhg

Is this a hardware problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Looks pretty normal to me.

Try pointing it to a close flat wall, you should get a nice continuous surface, such as the one shown here (I used an F200 for it though):

You can tweak some camera parameters if you know your scene to get a better result, but in general you will get noisy data. That's how this technology works.

And the farther away the object is, the worse it would get. Also, different materials will be shown differently on the depth channel as some are very opaque in infrared, and other very transparent. They may not match the visible view of it.

F200/SR300 use radically different depth sensing techniques and the noise profiles are not at all similar. It is possible your unit was miscalibrated, and at the very least you should request a replacement to be sure (and it's too hard to verify from a single image). Based on that single frame, I would expect slightly higher fill ratio.

I could not get anything close to your image quality. It shows in the screen capture I posted that there is a permanent noise pattern in the image.

I also posted a video above that shows the issue better. I have worked with kinect and asus xtion cameras, and the R200 was supposed to have the best image quality, but it is below my expectations, and the quality is not comparable to other screen recordings I found on the net like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCg9Xk_9Tn4 for example.

I try to contact support, but this forum was the only link I have found on the RealSense support page.

I've just received the replacement camera, and the results are much better. Works as expected. Thanks.

Could you post a comparison picture of the same scene?
