What cables do I need for the Haswell NUC? Does it have a hard drive?

It looks like my ASUS P7P55D motherboard won't work with the camera because it doesn't have USB 3.0 support, only the Pro version does apparently.

I therefore need to get the Haswell NUC I got running ASAP before there's no time left for the contest.  I've done a bunch of web searches I can't really suss out what cables I need to connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to it.  The unit seems to have odd connections.  Can anyone give some part numbers or something for the cables so I can run out buy some quick?  Below is the connector type I'd like to use on the device/peripheral end (not the Haswell NUC side of the connection):

- Monitor: Whatever a typical LCD monitor takes
- Keyboard: Standard USB connector
- Mouse: Standard USB connector

Also, I saw some people that also got NUC's from the contest say their units had a 320 GB hard drive.  Do all of them have that hard drive?  The brief docs that come with the NUC indicate that you have to get your own hard drive so I am wondering if my unit is different, or if Intel put a drive in there and the docs are just "stock" (that is, wrong for my actual configuration).

Thanks.

You need a HDMI LCD monitor, USB mouse and keyboard. 4GB+ DRAM, You may need a HDD or a SSD for Windows 8 Pro installation.

The NUC that intel gave away as a prize has an HDD and a wireless card already installed. If you buy a NUC, you will need to get those separately (you may also just use the standard ethernet port instead of adding the wifi card).

In regards to cables, note that the HDMI connection in the NUC is a mini HDMI, not the standard HDMI that most laptops/TVs have, or the micro HDMI that some tablets have. There is also a mini DisplayPort there in case you have that already (some macs come with this type of connection).

You NEED to connect a TV or monitor to boot the NUC for the first time and update all the drivers and BIOS. After the updates, you can run the NUC headless.

Thank you @chang-li and @samontab.  Will a mini HDMI cable connect to the typical video-in connector that most LCD monitors have?  Or do I need to pick up some kind of an adapter?  For example, I have an Acer v193w.  For example, do I need something like this?

Most LCD monitors have the full size standard HDMI connector, so you would need a mini HDMI to standard HDMI cable.
Something like this:

If you buy a NUC you will need:

  • miniHDMI - HDMI cable. All modern displays have a HDMI port.
  • USB keyboard.
  • USB mouse.
  • HDD (it's up to you, cheaper first):
    • 2.5" magnetic HDD
    • 2.5" SSD HDD
    • mSATA SSD
  • Memory: SO-DIMM 1600/1333 MHz 1.35V DDR3L (this is mandatory, a normal 1.5V will not work!)
  • Power cord: some units comes without the power cord, you have to check it and maybe you have to buy it separately.

8< All modern displays have a HDMI port.

Some have HDMI but almost all will have DVI.  Check your display first and then order the appropriate adaptor - mini HDMI-HDMI or miniHDMI-HDMI-DVI.
